Use of GIS and BIM tools in determining the life cycle impact of urban systems. Case study: Residential buildings which apply the Eco-Efficiency Matrix in the city of Quito, Ecuador

Nelly Revelo Caceres et al.

Summary: Among the various effects of human activity on the environment, construction is one of the main contributors to CO2 emissions and environmental impact. This study used LCA, BIM, and GIS to analyze the impact of high-rise buildings on urban environments and found that a concentrated city model in height has less environmental impact compared to uncontrolled urban expansion.

Ziyue Cheng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the environmental impact and optimization potential of prefabricated components through a life cycle assessment method. It found that a prefabrication rate of 50% and 30% could reduce potential global warming impact by 31.78% and 13.94% respectively. However, the production of prefabricated components in China incurred a social cost of up to $4.35 billion, with Shandong and Hubei provinces being the key areas for optimization.

Automated and continuous BIM-based life cycle carbon assessment for infrastructure design projects

Mudasir Hussain et al.

Summary: BIM-LCA integration facilitates sustainability indicators in infrastructure projects, but poses interoperability and information exchange issues. This study develops a parametric-life-cycle-carbon assessment (PLCCA) model for automating data-integration, dynamic-computations, and online-visualization of carbon emissions. The model incorporates emission factors as additional design parameters in the BIM-model and uses parameterized inputs to dynamically calculate carbon emissions. Multi-objective optimization is used to optimize design parameters and facilitate early decisions, reducing carbon emissions by 32.94% and 28.40% in the production and operational phases of a tunnel in Yunnan, China.

Carbon emission evaluation of prefabricated concrete composite plates during the building materialization stage

Xiaojuan Li et al.

Summary: Modern prefabricated building technology can save resources, shorten the construction period, improve quality, and reduce pollution and carbon emissions. This study investigated the carbon footprint of prefabricated concrete composite (PCC) plates at different construction stages using life cycle assessment, building information modeling, and geographic information system. The findings showed the significant correlation between prefabrication rate, carbon emission per unit area and per unit cost, highlighting the quantitative contributions of using more PCC to reduce carbon footprint. This research provides valuable insights for policy-making and promoting sustainable prefabricated construction.

Mitigating lifecycle GHG emissions of building sector through prefabricated light-steel buildings in comparison with traditional cast-in-place buildings

Kaihan Cai et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduction potential of prefabricated light-steel buildings (PLB) and traditional cast-in-place buildings (TCB) using the life cycle assessment method. The results show that PLB has a 6.76% reduction potential in GHG emissions compared to TCB. The construction phase of PLB reduces GHG emissions by 12.45% and its end-of-life phase has a 170.05% higher environmental benefit. Overall, this study evaluates GHG emissions of PLB and TCB, and identifies sustainable building practices and effective emission reduction measures, which will contribute to the green development of the construction industry in China.

Resource-use intensity and the labour market: More for less?

Andrew G. Ross et al.

Summary: Although reducing resource use can lead to lower CO2 emissions, it also results in a decrease in GDP and employment, particularly impacting unskilled workers. However, despite significant reductions in resource use, the scale of these effects is small, indicating that technology-induced reductions in resource use have the potential to support economic transition.

Xiaoxiao Xu et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the CO2 emissions and carbon storage of bamboo building materials and analyze the potential to reduce these carbon emissions. The planting phase contributes the most to carbon uptake, while the production phase contributes the highest carbon emissions. 'Carbonisation' is found to be the production process with the highest carbon emissions. Three strategies for reducing carbon emissions are proposed and validated.

Holistic life-cycle accounting of carbon emissions of prefabricated buildings using LCA and BIM

Xiao-juan Li et al.

Summary: Prefabricated concrete buildings (PCB) offer advantages of resource saving, reduced construction time, improved quality, and pollution reduction. This study developed a comprehensive life-cycle accounting system based on BIM technology to accurately and efficiently calculate carbon emissions of PCB and verify the effects of energy-saving and emission reduction. By analyzing representative residential PCB projects, it was found that carbon emissions were reduced with an increasing prefabrication rate in most construction stages. The operation and maintenance stage accounted for the highest carbon emissions (approximately 91% of the total), while the building materials production stage accounted for about 11%. The demolition and recycling stage showed negative carbon emissions. Compared to completely cast-in-place buildings, PCB had significantly lower carbon emissions.
