Linking roots, preferential flow, and soil moisture redistribution in deciduous and coniferous forest soils

Ziteng Luo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the distribution of soil water content in the presence of root-enhanced preferential flow and analyze the correlations between root traits and preferential flow features. The results showed that tree species with different root distribution patterns have varied impacts on soil moisture redistribution, and the effects of root traits are more apparent under lower rainfall amount.

Effects of climate change and human activities on vegetation coverage change in northern China considering extreme climate and time-lag and -accumulation effects

Mengyang Ma et al.

Summary: This study quantified the contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation change in northern China from 2000 to 2019. The results showed that climate change accounted for 30.2% of the vegetation change, while human activities accounted for 69.8%.

Predicting Soil Saturated Water Conductivity Using Pedo-Transfer Functions for Rocky Mountain Forests in Northern China

Di Wang et al.

Summary: Soil physicochemical properties and macropore spatial structure were found to affect saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). Pedo-transfer functions (PTFs) were used to predict Ks in six typical forestlands in Northern China. The results showed that Ks decreased with increasing soil depth and was influenced by factors such as soil composition and macropore structure. PTFs containing bulk density, organic matter content, and total phosphorus had the highest predictability for Ks.

Soil water movement differences relating to banana (Musa nana Lour.) plantation regime

Wanjun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of banana plantation regime on soil water flow pattern. The results showed that soil physical properties varied with depth and had a restricting effect on soil infiltration. The saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased with distance from the banana stem. Preferential flow was the main transport path for soil water and was influenced by soil bulk density, porosity, and root systems. Improving the root network in banana plantation can result in better soil physical properties.

The biodiversity and ecosystem service contributions and trade-offs of forest restoration approaches

Fangyuan Hua et al.

Summary: This study compares the delivery of co-benefits across different forest restoration approaches worldwide and finds variations in the delivery of climate, soil, water, wood production services, and biodiversity. Native forests outperform plantations in carbon storage, water provisioning, soil erosion control, and biodiversity, while plantations have an advantage in wood production. These findings highlight the trade-offs that policymakers need to consider when meeting forest restoration commitments.

Spatial variation of grassland canopy affects soil wetting patterns and preferential flow

Goekben Demir et al.

Summary: The spatial variation of grassland canopies has a significant impact on soil moisture wetting patterns, not only in forests but also in managed grasslands, indicating a strong influence of preferential flow.

Efficacy of orchard terrace measures to minimize water erosion caused by extreme rainfall in the hilly region of China: Long-term continuous in situ observations

Jian Duan et al.

Summary: Terracing and rainfall characteristics have significant effects on water erosion processes. This study found that under extreme rainfall conditions, surface runoff and soil erosion were more severe, and a combination of vegetation taluses and front mounds and back ditches is recommended as a sustainable strategy for erosion control.

Effects of hillslope position on soil water infiltration and preferential flow in tropical forest in southwest China

Chunfeng Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that soil physical properties decreased with elevation from the hilltop to the valley bottom, while water infiltration capacity showed the opposite trend. Preferential flow had a greater impact on soil water movement in upper locations compared to the valley bottom. Soil infiltration capacity parameters and preferential flow were significantly correlated with soil properties like water content, porosity, root biomass, and termite holes.
