Perceived accessibility: What it is and why it differs from calculated accessibility measures based on spatial data

Felix Johan Pot et al.

Summary: This paper explains the concept of accessibility and the mismatches with perceived accessibility, proposing the establishment of a conceptual model to understand the mechanisms behind these discrepancies. It points out that inaccuracies in awareness and failure to consider subjective evaluations can lead to mismatches between calculated indicators and perceptions of accessibility.

Investigation on the impact of walkways slope and pedestrians physical characteristics on pedestrians normal walking and jogging speeds

Kayvan Aghabayk et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of walkway slope on pedestrian speed, finding that jogging speed decreases significantly on steep downhill compared to level terrain. The speed difference between males and females is higher during jogging than normal walking, and the difference in speed between elderly and young pedestrians during jogging is almost twice that of normal walking. Additionally, body mass index significantly affects walking or jogging speed, with jogging speed decreasing faster with an increase in BMI.

A comparison of methods for measuring spatial access to health care

Coleman Drake et al.

Summary: This study compared commonly used measures of spatial access to care with the enhanced two-step floating catchment area (E2SFCA) method, finding that the commonly used measures do not accurately identify geographic areas with relatively low access to care providers. The E2SFCA method, capturing provider capacity, potential patient volume, and travel time, is more comprehensive and allows policy makers to precisely target interventions to increase spatial access to healthcare services.

Spread of COVID-19 in urban neighbourhoods and slums of the developing world

Anand Sahasranaman et al.

Summary: The study shows that only a small number of neighborhoods in developing countries account for the majority of COVID-19 cases, especially in slum areas. As the epidemic progresses, the distribution of cases becomes less unequal, but at the end of the epidemic, peak and cumulative cases in slum neighborhoods are still higher than in non-slum areas.
