Solvent-Free Nonthermal Destruction of PFAS Chemicals and PFAS in Sediment by Piezoelectric Ball Milling

Nanyang Yang et al.

Summary: Research on the destruction of solid PFAS chemicals and PFAS-laden solid wastes has not kept pace with social demand. A novel treatment process called piezoelectric-material-assisted ball milling (PZM-BM) is developed in this study, which can destroy nonaqueous PFAS at ambient conditions. The PZM-BM process demonstrates the complete destruction and near-quantitative defluorination of solid PFAS and shows promise for treating PFAS-contaminated sediment. This pioneering study lays the groundwork for optimizing PZM-BM to treat various PFAS-laden solid wastes.

Solvent-Free, Ambient Temperature and Pressure Destruction of Perfluorosulfonic Acids under Mechanochemical Conditions: Degradation Intermediates and Fluorine Fate

Kapish Gobindlal et al.

Summary: Perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs), a subclass of PFASs, can be effectively destroyed through mechanochemical destruction (MCD) in the presence of quartz sand (SiO2), without the need for solvents and under ambient conditions. The destruction efficiency of five different PFSAs subjected to MCD conditions with SiO2 reached 99.95% to 100%. Other PFASs were formed and ultimately destroyed during the degradation process. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the formation of silicon-fluorine (Si-F) bonds post-MCD, indicating the stable sequestration of fluorine.

Elucidating the relationship between PFOA and PFOS destruction, particle size and electron generation in amended media commonly found in soils

Lauren P. Turner et al.

Summary: Ball milling is a promising technique for treating PFAS-impacted soils, and the properties of reactive species and particle size play crucial roles in the effectiveness of this technology. Four media types were planetary ball milled with PFOA and PFOS to investigate destruction, fluoride recovery, particle size, and electron generation. Silica sand and nepheline syenite sand showed positive correlations between particle size reduction, destruction of PFAS, and electron generation. All media types demonstrated electron generation during ball milling, and fluoride loss was observed in all amended media types. A method using NaF-amended media was proposed to estimate the total fluorine liberated from PFOA and PFOS by ball milling. A reductive destruction mechanism for PFOA and PFOS was proposed based on the data from this study.

Use of a horizontal ball mill to remediate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in soil

Nicholas J. Battye et al.

Summary: There is a need for destructive technologies to degrade PFAS in soil, and this study evaluated the effectiveness of horizontal ball mills in degrading PFAS and non-target fluorotelomer substances. The results support further scale-up and preparation for on-site pilot tests.

Mechanochemical remediation of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) amended sand and aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) impacted soil by planetary ball milling

Lauren P. Turner et al.

Summary: PFAS are manmade fluorinated organic chemicals identified as persistent organic pollutants, with surface active properties suitable for oil- and water-resistant products and firefighting foams. Studies show that PFOS and PFOA can be effectively degraded by mechanochemical treatment with the use of co-milling reagents and adjustments in water saturation.

Remediation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated soils - To mobilize or to immobilize or to degrade?

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities, with major sources being firefighting foam, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soils is challenging due to their stability and mixture complexity. Mobilizing amendments increase PFAS mobility and bioavailability, while immobilizing amendments decrease transfer to food chain and leaching to water sources. Future research should focus on quantifying potential leaching of mobilized PFAS and monitoring long-term stability of immobilized PFAS.

Distribution, behaviour, bioavailability and remediation of poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in solid biowastes and biowaste-treated soil

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Aqueous film-forming foam and biowastes are major sources of PFAS in soil, with plant uptake of PFAS through soil application of biowastes being a pathway for animal and human exposure. Remediation of PFAS in biowastes and soils treated with these biowastes can be achieved through various methods including prevention through source control, soil washing, phytoremediation, immobilization, and destruction. This review presents the distribution, bioavailability, and remediation of PFAS in soil receiving solid biowastes such as biosolids, composts, and manure.

The Mechanism of Surface-Radical Generation and Amorphization of Crystalline Quartz Sand upon Mechanochemical Grinding

Kapish Gobindlal et al.

Summary: Structural and morphological changes during mechanochemical grinding of quartz sand were characterized using various analytical techniques. Surface area increased rapidly during the initial 60 minutes of grinding but did not lead to formation of mechanoradicals. Instead, a significant increase in species levels was observed after an initial lag phase. Analysis over 600 minutes revealed matrix amorphization.
