Evapotranspiration across the rain-snow transition in a semi-arid watershed

Maggi Kraft et al.

Summary: In this study, we assessed the variation of evapotranspiration (ET) and growing season length in different elevational sites in the Dry Creek Watershed of the USA. The study found that environmental parameters have an influence on ET and highlight the potential sensitivity of ET to climate change.

Application of a novel cascade-routing and reinfiltration concept with a Voronoi unstructured grid in MODFLOW 6, for an assessment of surface-water/groundwater interactions in a hard-rock catchment (Sardon, Spain)

Mostafa Gomaa Daoud et al.

Summary: Integrated hydrological modelling (IHM) accurately simulates surface-water/groundwater interactions in hard-rock systems (HRS) by improving the modelling environment and introducing new concepts. The study finds that groundwater fluxes exhibit significant spatio-temporal variability, groundwater exfiltration plays a crucial role, catchment storage is low, water table and streams respond quickly to rainfall, and net recharge shows a mosaic pattern. Compared to previous versions, MODFLOW 6 has many improvements and, with the proposed concept, achieves a modelling capacity comparable to multi-environment models while being more flexible and efficient.

What Do P-Wave Velocities Tell Us About the Critical Zone?

Brady A. Flinchum et al.

Summary: Fractures in Earth's critical zone affect groundwater flow, storage, and chemical weathering. Seismic velocities in the fractured bedrock layer of the critical zone are scale-dependent, with smaller-scale velocities showing significant heterogeneity in fracture density and larger-scale velocities being slower and lacking lateral heterogeneity. The discrepancy is a result of the contrasting measurement scales between the two methods, providing information on the fractured medium at vastly different scales.

Soil structure and soil moisture dynamics inferred from time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography

Travis Nielson et al.

Summary: The semi-arid sagebrush steppe in the western United States is under pressure from various factors, and understanding the distribution and behavior of soil moisture in the vadose zone is crucial for ecosystem management. Soil moisture in unsaturated environments is heterogeneous, with changes in porosity and permeability complicating the characterization of soil hydrologic properties. The presence of caliche in arid soils can greatly limit permeability and hinder infiltration, but the role it plays in the hydrologic process is difficult to observe.

Bedrock Groundwater Catchment Area Unveils Rainfall-Runoff Processes in Headwater Basins

N. Masaoka et al.

Summary: This study determined the catchment area of bedrock groundwater (BGW) and found its significant influence on surface runoff characteristics. By measuring the BGW catchment area, it provided a more accurate prediction of actual catchment effect and baseflow volume for the watershed.

The Effect of Aspect and Elevation on Critical Zone Architecture in the Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory: A Seismic Refraction Study

Travis Nielson et al.

Summary: In snow-dominated mountainous watersheds in the northern hemisphere, north-facing slopes tend to be more deeply weathered than south-facing slopes due to the more persistent snowpack. A study conducted in Johnston Draw revealed that differences in snow accumulation can lead to variations in weathering depth, with the largest difference occurring where snow accumulation is greatest.
