A Unifying Mathematical Definition of Particle Methods

Johannes Pahlke et al.

Summary: Particle methods are widely used algorithms for computer simulation in various fields. However, the relationship between these algorithms and a formal definition of particle methods has been lacking. In this study, a rigorous mathematical definition of particle methods is presented and its importance is demonstrated through various applications and theorems. It is anticipated that this formal definition will facilitate solving complex computational problems and the development of maintainable software frameworks for computer simulation.

Biomaterialomics: Data science-driven pathways to develop fourth-generation biomaterials

Bikramjit Basu et al.

Summary: This leading opinion review paper emphasizes the integration of data science concepts and algorithms with biomaterials science. It also highlights the need for a mathematically rigorous cross-disciplinary framework that allows for systematic quantitative exploration and curation of critical biomaterials knowledge, driven by the concept of "biomaterialomics" which integrates multi-omics data and high-dimensional analysis with artificial intelligence tools like machine learning. The formulation of this approach has been demonstrated for patient-specific implants, additive manufacturing, and bioelectronic medicine.

Polarized interfacial tension induces collective migration of cells, as a cluster, in a 3D tissue

Satoru Okuda et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of collective cell migration in 3D tissues. Numerical simulations using a 3D vertex model reveal that polarized interfacial tension between cells enables cluster migration without cell rearrangement. The strength of polarity, adhesion, and noise determines different migratory modes, including single cell migration, cluster migration, and string-like alignment observed in embryogenesis and cancer invasion.

Mechanochemical subcellular-element model of crawling cells

Mitsusuke Tarama et al.

Summary: Constructing physical models of living cells and tissues is challenging due to the complexities of intra- and intercellular processes. This study develops a basic mechanochemical model to understand how a crawling cell coordinates processes for autonomous migration. The model focuses on the dependence of protrusion, contraction, adhesion, and de-adhesion on intracellular biochemical signals. The study sheds light on how intracellular chemical reactions contribute to directional cell migration.

Programmed and self-organized flow of information during morphogenesis

Claudio Collinet et al.

Summary: This article discusses how cell mechanics and associated cell behaviors are robustly organized during tissue morphogenesis in space and time. It outlines how gene expression, mechanics, and geometry act as sources of morphogenetic information and how this information flows, either following deterministic rules or self-organized principles. The integration of pre-patterned and stochastic tissue shaping during development is also explored.

3D mesenchymal cell migration is driven by anterior cellular contraction that generates an extracellular matrix prestrain

Andrew D. Doyle et al.

Summary: The study reveals that fibroblasts and mesenchymal cancer cells utilize a cellular contractile mechanism to migrate in 3D collagen gels, with varying 3D migration cycles between cell types. It is essential for efficient directional cell migration to maintain prestrain and anterior contractions, which require myosin IIA. Epithelial cancer and endothelial cells show little sustained prestrain or anterior contractions, suggesting a different mechanism for migration.

Modelling human blastocysts by reprogramming fibroblasts into iBlastoids

Xiaodong Liu et al.

Summary: The study describes a method to reprogram fibroblasts into human blastocyst models, known as iBlastoids. This model can mimic the overall structure of blastocysts, including inner cell mass, epiblast, primitive endoderm-like cells, blastocoel-like cavity, and trophectoderm-like cells. The iBlastoids system is believed to facilitate the study of early human development, the effects of gene mutations and toxins during early embryogenesis, and the development of new therapies associated with in vitro fertilization.

Embryonic tissues as active foams

Sangwoo Kim et al.

Summary: The study revealed that tissue fluidization in posterior zebrafish tissues is controlled by the stochastic dynamics of tensions at cell-cell contacts. Tension fluctuations drive active cell rearrangements that fluidize the tissue, highlighting a key role of non-equilibrium tension dynamics in developmental processes. This computational framework draws analogy with foams to offer a comprehensive picture of how cell behaviours influence fluidization in embryonic tissues, highlighting the role of tension fluctuations in regulating tissue rigidity.

A rigid body framework for multicellular modeling

Phillip J. Brown et al.

Summary: Off-lattice models are an established approach in multicellular modeling, representing cells as points free to move in space. A new off-lattice modeling framework using rigid body mechanics to represent objects as conjoined one-dimensional edges in a viscosity-dominated system has been introduced, offering solutions to limitations in current off-lattice multicellular models. This framework allows for representation of cells as free moving polygons, interactions of epithelial layers, modeling of rod-shaped cells like bacteria, and robust representation of membranes.
