Single GaP nanowire nonlinear characterization with the aid of an optical trap

Alexey D. Bolshakov et al.

Summary: The study investigates the linear and nonlinear waveguiding optical properties of single GaP nanowires, demonstrating efficient second harmonic generation and unveiling phase matching conditions, which opens a new avenue for the generation of optoelectronic origami-type devices by picking up and accurately positioning pre-tested structures with optomechanical manipulation.

Optically-assisted thermophoretic reversible assembly of colloidal particles and E. coli using graphene oxide microstructures

Jostine Puthenveetil Joby et al.

Summary: Optically-assisted large-scale assembly of nanoparticles has gained recent attention for its potential in assembling and manipulating colloidal particles and biological entities. This work presents an alternative method using graphene oxide's excellent photothermal properties to achieve non-equilibrium transport and assembly of matter. Experimental results demonstrate the rapid aggregation of silica beads using low-intensity laser illumination, attributed to optically driven thermophoretic forces.

Hybrid electro-optical trap for experiments with levitated particles in vacuum

Dmitry S. Bykov et al.

Summary: In this study, a microparticle is confined in a hybrid potential created by a Paul trap and a dual-beam optical trap. The particle is transferred between the Paul trap and the optical trap at different pressures, and the influence of feedback cooling on the transfer process is examined. This technique provides a pathway for experiments with optically levitated particles in ultra-high vacuum and in potentials with complex structures.

One-Temperature Analytical Model for Femto-/Atto-Second Laser-Metals Drilling: A Novel Approach

Cristian N. Mihailescu et al.

Summary: Recently, the study of ultrafast laser-material interaction has gained worldwide attention. Computational models are needed to reduce the cost of real-time experimentation. A non-Fourier heat equation was used to solve the problem, and a close correlation between simulations and experimental results was found. Interesting phenomena were observed, such as the coupling of electron-phonon becoming zero and the propagation of thermal waves due to non-Fourier heat implementation.

Golden Vaterite as a Mesoscopic Metamaterial for Biophotonic Applications

Roman E. Noskov et al.

Summary: Mesoscopic photonic systems have great potential in biomedical devices, but biocompatibility is often a challenge. A unique biofriendly approach to delivering optical resonances through controlled infusion of gold nanoseeds into polycrystalline sub-micrometer vaterite spherulites has demonstrated the creation of a tunable optical metamaterial. The concept of golden vaterite paves the way for introducing designer-made Mie resonances in cutting-edge biophotonic applications.

Comparative study of the real-time optical trapping in the Rayleigh regime for continuous and femtosecond pulsed lasers

Soumendra Nath Bandyopadhyay et al.

Summary: This study presents a newly developed model to predict the stability of traps in real optical trapping scenarios, which could provide valuable information on the selection of solvents, probes, and optical parameters. The differences between continuous wave and femtosecond pulsed laser mediated optical trapping in terms of scattering and gradient forces in the Rayleigh regime are highlighted.

Reconstitution of β-adrenergic regulation of CaV1.2: Rad-dependent and Rad-independent protein kinase A mechanisms

Moshe Katz et al.

Summary: CaV1.2 channels play a crucial role in regulating cardiac muscle contraction, with 0-AR increasing contraction by enhancing calcium influx through these channels via PKA activation. A recent study identified Rad as essential for PKA regulation of CaV1.2, revealing two distinct pathways of PKA modulation of CaV1.2: Rad dependent and Rad independent.

Damage-free light-induced assembly of intestinal bacteria with a bubble-mimetic substrate

Kota Hayashi et al.

Summary: Hayashi et al. propose a method to realize rapid, damage-free, remote light-induced assembly of microbes over a submillimeter area with the bubble-mimetic substrate. They assemble 10(4)-10(5) cells of lactic acid bacteria with a survival rate higher than 95% around a laser spot. This technique is promising in developing methods for rapid and high-efficiency functional analysis of microbes.

Opto-refrigerative tweezers

Jingang Li et al.

Summary: The opto-refrigerative tweezers utilize solid-state optical refrigeration and thermophoresis to trap particles and molecules at the laser-generated cold region, avoiding photothermal heating. Using a weakly focused laser beam can further reduce photodamages to the target object, offering new possibilities in the optical control of nanomaterials and biomolecules.

Multipole Engineering of Attractive-Repulsive and Bending Optical Forces

Denis A. Kislov et al.

Summary: In this study, optical forces acting on a high refractive index sphere in a focused Gaussian beam are analyzed, revealing new mechanisms. The multipolar analysis shows that optical forces can be separated into interception and recoil components, leading to different mechanical actions. The multipolar engineering of optical forces opens up new possibilities in microfluidic applications.
