Enhanced CO oxidation by reversible structural variation of supported Ag nanoparticle catalyst from single to twin by CO treatment

Takehiro Tamura et al.

Summary: The twinned structure of metal nanoparticles can be reversibly controlled by gas treatment, which strongly affects catalysis due to the unique atomic alignment and bond strain in metal nanoparticles. In this study, the structure of supported Ag nanoparticles on Ag/Al2O3 was changed from single crystal to twin structure by subsequent CO gas treatment after H2 treatment. This change in structure enhanced the CO oxidation activity, and the catalytic activity could be reversibly changed by applying H2 and CO gas treatment.

Directional Migration and Rapid Coalescence of Au Nanoparticles on Anisotropic ReS2

Yadi Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, the directional migration and structural evolution of Au nanoparticles on anisotropic ReS2 were investigated using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. It was found that Au nanoparticles with diameters below 3 nm preferentially migrate along the b-axis direction. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the lower diffusion energy barrier enables the directional migration. The coalescence kinetics of Au nanoparticles were quantitatively described using the relationship r(2) = Kt. This work provides an atomic-resolved dynamic analysis method for studying the interfacial structural evolution of metal/2D materials, which is crucial for understanding the stability of nanodevices based on mixed-dimensional nanomaterials.

Bringing into play automated electron microscopy data processing for understanding nanoparticulate electrocatalysts' structure-property relationships

Ana Rebeka Kamsek et al.

Summary: This article highlights the importance of observing and quantifying information at the atomic scale for assessing the structure-property relationships in electrocatalysis. It particularly focuses on resolving the structural features of supported nanoparticulate fuel cell and electrolyzer electrocatalysts at the atomic level and their evolution in response to external stimuli. The use of atomically resolved electron micrographs before and after induced changes can provide quantifiable data for elucidating the structure-activity and stability relationships of studied materials, which remains an unexplored research resource in this field.

Interface structure and strain controlled Pt nanocrystals grown at side facet of MoS2 with critical size

Yucheng Zhu et al.

Summary: The heterostructure of transition metal nanocrystal on two-dimensional materials exhibits unique properties through interfacial interactions. However, understanding and control of the interfacial structures remain challenging. In this study, the regulation of interface on MoS2 supported Pt nanocrystals was explored. It was found that the strain within the Pt nanocrystals is sensitive to the atomic configuration of the supporting MoS2, which influences the size of the Pt nanocrystals.

Correlating 3D Surface Atomic Structure and Catalytic Activities of Pt Nanocrystals

Sungin Kim et al.

Summary: The surface atomic structures of synthesized Pt nanocrystals were found to be complex, with a high ratio of low-coordination surface atoms, reduced domain size of low-index facets, and various types of exposed high-index facets. The 3D maps of generalized coordination number ((CN) over bar) are directly correlated to catalytic activities, explaining the high catalytic performance of small Pt nanocrystals in important reactions.
