A literature review of the relationship between dyadic coping and dyadic outcomes in cancer couples

Meizhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively summarized the relationship between dyadic coping and dyadic outcomes in cancer couples, finding that positive dyadic coping strategies can strengthen marital bonds, alleviate stress, and improve mental health, but may also increase physical and psychological burden. Negative dyadic coping and protective buffering were associated with lower relationship satisfaction, worse quality of life, and more depressive symptoms.

Relationship communication and the course of psychological outcomes among couples coping with localised prostate cancer

Sharon L. Manne et al.

Summary: Communication between couples about cancer plays a significant role in predicting the psychological outcomes of men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer and their spouses. Higher levels of disclosure and responsiveness were found to predict better psychological outcomes, while lower levels of mutual avoidance and holding back were associated with poorer psychological outcomes. Individuals who initially engaged in poor communication showed improvement in their psychological outcomes over time, while those who initially engaged in better communication maintained their positive outcomes or improved further. Couples with better communication still had better psychological outcomes at six months. More research is needed to explore effective interventions for improving cancer-specific relationship communication.
