Timing and duration of nutrient restriction and its impacts on placental development and umbilical blood flow in adolescent sheep

M. A. Vasquez-Hidalgo et al.

Summary: We hypothesized that nutrient restriction decreases umbilical blood flow, but this flow does not recover to normal levels upon realimentation. Our findings suggest that adequate placental development during mid gestation could protect the fetus from decreased blood flow later in gestation.

Tissue-specific responses that constrain glucose oxidation and increase lactate production with the severity of hypoxemia in fetal sheep

Amanda K. Jones et al.

Summary: Hypoxemia decreases fetal glucose oxidation and increases lactate production, potentially due to increased norepinephrine and cortisol levels that inhibit insulin secretion and glucose utilization.

Fetal Sex Does Not Impact Placental Blood Flow or Placental Amino Acid Transfer in Late Gestation Pregnant Sheep With or Without Placental Insufficiency

Summary: The study found that fetal sex does not have a widespread impact on experimental insults, with most outcomes showing no gender-based differences. The only exceptions were higher hormone concentrations in female fetuses.

Prenatal Oxygen and Glucose Therapy Normalizes Insulin Secretion and Action in Growth-Restricted Fetal Sheep

Leticia E. Camacho et al.

Summary: Placental insufficiency can lead to decreased oxygen and glucose concentrations in the fetus, resulting in fetal growth restriction. Current prenatal treatments do not address the simultaneous correction of oxygen and glucose supply. This study found that a 5-day correction of oxygen and glucose concentrations can normalize insulin secretion and glucose metabolism in fetuses with placental insufficiency-induced fetal growth restriction.

Uptake of Phosphate, Calcium, and Vitamin D by the Pregnant Uterus of Sheep in Late Gestation: Regulation by Chorionic Somatomammotropin Hormone

Claire Stenhouse et al.

Summary: This study used lentiviral-mediated RNA interference to investigate the regulatory role of chorionic somatomammotropin hormone (CSH) in the utilization of calcium, phosphate, and vitamin D in late gestation in sheep. The study found that CSH RNAi significantly affected the uptake and concentration of calcium, phosphate, and vitamin D, as well as the expression levels of several candidate mRNAs.

Mid- to late-gestational maternal nutrient restriction followed by realimentation alters development and lipid composition of liver and skeletal muscles in ovine fetuses

Brandon Smith et al.

Summary: Maternal nutrient restriction during gestation negatively impacts offspring liver and muscle development, but realimentation may mitigate these effects. Realimentation was found to decrease the impact of late-gestational maternal nutrient restriction on fetal liver and muscle, although it also led to alterations in lipid metabolism.

Anemic hypoxemia reduces myoblast proliferation and muscle growth in late-gestation fetal sheep

Paul J. Rozance et al.

Summary: Fetal anemic hypoxemia was found to reduce muscle growth, leading to decreased muscle weight and fiber area, as well as reduced myoblast proliferation and differentiation. However, overall protein kinetic rates did not differ significantly between anemic and control fetuses.

The physiological effects of creatine supplementation in fetal sheep before, during, and after umbilical cord occlusion and global hypoxia

Nhi Thao Tran et al.

Summary: This study found that direct fetal creatine supplementation increased plasma and cerebral creatine concentrations without affecting fetal physiology pre-UCO. The creatine did not alter fetal responses during UCO or in the early recovery stage, but changes in arterial oxygenation were observed 24-72 hours post UCO. Furthermore, an increase in total creatine levels in certain fetal brain regions, such as the striatum, was detected following acute global hypoxia, suggesting a potential adaptive response to oxygen deprivation.

Augmented glucose production is not contingent on high catecholamines in fetal sheep with IUGR

Melissa A. Davis et al.

Summary: In this study, fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) were found to have higher concentrations of catecholamines, but their glucose metabolism adaptation was independent of catecholamines and appeared to be driven by hypoxemia and hypoglycemia.
