Fabrication of C/SiC composites by siliconizing carbon fiber reinforced nanoporous carbon matrix preforms and their properties

Rida Zhao et al.

Summary: RMI-C/SiC composites fabricated using a carbon fiber reinforced nanoporous carbon matrix preform demonstrate high performance with dense and pure SiC matrix and intact carbon fibers. In contrast, composites based on conventional pyrocarbon or resin carbon matrixes show poorer properties with less SiC, residual silicon and carbon, and corroded fibers. This work opens up a new way for the development of high-performance ceramic matrix composites by siliconizing C/C preforms with nanoporous carbon matrix.

Structural characteristics and ablative behavior of YF3 modified C/C-ZrC-SiC composites and their preparation by molten salt assisted reactive melt infiltration

Yuzhu Shen et al.

Summary: YF3 modified C/C-ZrC-SiC composites were prepared using molten salt assisted reactive melt infiltration, and the infiltration mechanism and ablative behavior were discussed. YF3 effectively seals existing pores and cracks in C/C-ZrC-SiC material. During ablation, YF3 modified composites form yttrium oxide stabilized zirconia, resulting in reduced mass ablation rate and linear ablation rate.

Synthesis, microstructure and mechanical properties of lamellar YB2C2 based ultra-high temperature ceramic composites

Antonio Vinci et al.

Summary: A significant improvement in mechanical performance was achieved in ZrB2-based ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites (UHTCMCs) through the introduction of rare earth oxides, resulting in the formation of ternary boro-carbides of general formula REB2C2. This study investigated the potential routes for synthesizing YB2C2 phases at UHTC sintering temperatures by using different boron sources, and analyzed their microstructure using SEM, XRD, and TEM. The findings showed that the mixture with B4C exhibited the highest selectivity for the formation of YB2C2, and a long carbon fibre reinforced YB2C2 ceramic composite with a flexural strength of 380 MPa was successfully fabricated. The chemical stability of these materials in air was also assessed.

Capillary infiltration of liquid silicon in carbon nanotubes: A molecular dynamics simulation

Kangyu Zhang et al.

Summary: By simplifying the nanopores of porous C/C preform with SWCNTs or DWCNTs, the infiltration of liquid Si in the carbon nanotubes was studied using MD simulations. A quantitative relationship between tube diameter and liquid Si infiltration rate was established, which successfully reproduced the experimental results. The obtained relationship showed that the capillary infiltration of liquid Si at the nanoscale follows the Lucas-Washburn law, but infiltration quickly stops in small tubes with a diameter less than 3 nm due to tube wall contraction. This work provides theoretical guidance for optimizing the pore structure of porous C/C preform to fabricate high-density C/SiC composites.

Microstructure and flexural strength of C/HfC-ZrC-SiC composites prepared by reactive melt infiltration method

Sijie Kou et al.

Summary: C/HfC-ZrC-SiC composites were fabricated using reactive melt infiltration (RMI) of mixed HfSi2 and ZrSi2 alloys. The microstructure, infiltration behavior, and flexural strength of the composites were studied. The composites exhibited compositional segregation, with different phases distributed in the exterior and interior regions. A model for the reactive melt infiltration process was established, and the C/HfC-ZrC-SiC composites showed higher flexural strength compared to other composites prepared by the same process.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Cf/SiC composites with dispersed C-SiC interphase prepared by chemical vapor infiltration

Changhui Niu et al.

Summary: This study proposes and verifies a simple and cost-effective method to prepare Cf/SiC composites with dispersed C-SiC interphase. The dispersed C-SiC interphase is formed by the diffusion of SiC precursor molecules into the porous carbon coating derived from the decomposition of the sizing agent. The study has a positive application value for the manufacture of composites in terms of significantly reducing the preparation cost and cycle duration.

Comparative study of microstructure and ablation behaviour of C/C-HfC-SiC composites prepared under two different conditions

Zhiqiang Liu et al.

Summary: C/C-SiC-HfC composites were prepared using reactive melt infiltration (RMI) with different pressure conditions. The distribution of SiC and HfC ceramics can be regulated by adjusting the RMI pressure, resulting in different surface compositions. The composites prepared under normal pressure exhibited better ablation performance with the formation of a HfSi2-HfC-SiC mixed layer. The presence of HfSi2 improved the densification of HfO2 film, enhancing the ablation resistance.

Tailoring microstructures of carbon fiber reinforced carbon aerogel-like matrix composites by carbonization to modulate their mechanical properties and thermal conductivities

Jian Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure evolution of carbon fiber reinforced carbon aerogel-like matrix composites and its influence on their properties. The results show that the carbonization temperature affects the volume shrinkage, micropore amount, particle size, and microstructure of the composites. The resulting composites exhibit higher compressive strengths and low thermal conductivity compared to other reported carbon foams or aerogels with similar bulk densities. The increase in strength and modulus with carbonization temperature is attributed to reduced tensile stress, improved particle packing compactness, larger microcrystallite size, and less residual organo-functional groups.
