Graphene oxide incorporated cellulose acetate beads for efficient removal of methylene blue dye; isotherms, kinetic, mechanism and co-existing ions studies

Abdelazeem S. Eltaweil et al.

Summary: New porous adsorbent beads were developed by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into cellulose acetate beads (CA) for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye. The adsorption of MB dye increased with increasing GO ratio, following the PSO kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 369.85 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic interactions, H-bonding, van der Waals forces, n-pi and pi-pi interactions. The beads exhibited excellent recycling ability and high selectivity towards MB molecules in the presence of co-existing cations.

Adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solution by crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose/organo-montmorillonite composite hydrogels

Liang Shi et al.

Summary: Environmentally friendly crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose-based hybrid hydrogels (CCMC/OMMT) with a grafting of 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) onto CCMC and reinforced with Organo-Montmorillonite (OMMT) were developed as efficient adsorbents for methylene blue (MB). Various techniques including FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDS, XPS, and TGA were used to analyze the composition and shape of the hydrogels. The adsorption capacity of CCMC/OMMT for MB was found to be 490.5 mg/g at 313.15 K and pH 7.0. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm were successfully described by the pseudo-second-order dynamic theory and Langmuir isotherm theory. The results indicated that the binding of MB on CCMC/OMMT was spontaneous and endothermic, facilitated by electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bonding interaction. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibited reusability for MB removal.
