A statistical study of the compressible energy cascade rate in solar wind turbulence: Parker solar probe observations

M. Brodiano et al.

Summary: We investigated the incompressible and compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy cascade rates in the solar wind at various distances from the Sun using observations from the Parker Solar Probe mission and exact relations in fully developed turbulence. We found an increase in both the compressible and incompressible cascade rates as we approached the Sun, and the isothermal and polytropic cascade rates increased with increasing plasma compressibility. We also compared two exact relations for different levels of compressibility in the solar wind and observed similar cascade rates within the range of compressibility studied.

Scaling laws for the energy transfer in space plasma turbulence

Raffaele Marino et al.

Summary: One characteristic trait of space plasmas is the multi-scale dynamics resulting from non-linear transfers and conversions of various forms of energy. Turbulence is a major cross-scale energy transfer mechanism in space plasmas, affecting the energy fate at intermediate scales. Other mechanisms, such as magnetic reconnection and particle energization, also contribute to the challenging prediction of the dynamical state of space plasmas. In recent decades, scaling laws and advanced methodologies have played a crucial role in characterizing the energy transfer in space plasmas, together with robotic missions.

Helical fluid and (Hall)-MHD turbulence: a brief review

Annick Pouquet et al.

Summary: Helicity, a measure of the breakage of reflectional symmetry, plays a crucial role in the topology, dynamics, and statistical properties of turbulent flows. This review highlights the main features of helicity, including the discovery of bi-directional cascades and the role of helical vortices in enhancing magnetic fields. The article also discusses the dynamical contribution of the cross-correlation between velocity and induction in magnetohydrodynamics. Additionally, the effects of helical constraints on turbulent transport and the construction of turbulence models for non-reflectionally symmetric helical flows are explored.

The incompressible energy cascade rate in anisotropic solar wind turbulence

N. Andres et al.

Summary: This study investigates the isotropy and anisotropy energy cascade rates in solar wind turbulence using more than two years of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations. The results show a dominance of perpendicular cascades over parallel cascades, and a dominant 2D cascade and/or geometry over the slab component in the largest MHD scales.

Relativistic Particle Transport and Acceleration in Structured Plasma Turbulence

Oreste Pezzi et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the energization of relativistic charged particles in three-dimensional incompressible MHD turbulence and the diffusive properties of their motion. The results show that turbulent plasma motion induces a random electric field, leading to stochastic acceleration of test particles in a simulated box, developing a second-order Fermi process. Some particles are trapped in large-scale structures and experience exponential acceleration if certain conditions are met.

Test Particle Energization of Heavy Ions in Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

F. Pugliese et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energization and displacement of heavy ions through the interaction between test particles and electromagnetic fields in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The results show that with heavier ions, energization occurs more in the perpendicular direction and high displacement hinders perpendicular energization. However, perpendicular displacement is not affected by the charge-to-mass ratio, which can be explained by a simple guide center model. Preferential concentration analysis using Voronoi tessellation reveals that particles behave as tracers in the perpendicular plane, clustering in regions with specific characteristics.

Effect of the electronic pressure on the energy and magnetic moment of charged test particles in turbulent electromagnetic fields

B. Balzarini et al.

Summary: In this study, direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics with a background magnetic field were performed, and test particles were introduced to explore their behavior in a turbulent electromagnetic environment. The focus was on the electric field terms, particularly the electronic pressure term, which was found to generate parallel acceleration of protons in contrast to the known perpendicular energization. By studying the electric field itself, the structures of the electronic pressure field that produce this parallel acceleration were identified.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of high-wavenumber turbulence in a basic laboratory plasma

Yuichi Kawachi et al.

Summary: By controlling the magnetic field and using a multi-channel Langmuir array arranged azimuthally, high-spatial resolution observation of high-wavenumber broadband turbulence is achieved in a basic laboratory plasma. The observed turbulence includes narrowband low-frequency fluctuations and broadband high-frequency turbulent fluctuations. The two-dimensional correlation analysis reveals that the high-wavenumber broadband fluctuations exhibit turbulent characteristics. These measurements provide further insights into small scale turbulence in space and fusion plasmas.

Settling and clustering of particles of moderate mass density in turbulence

Christian Reartes et al.

Summary: In a study of settling and clustering of small inertial particles in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence under dilute conditions, it was found that varying the fluid-to-particle mass ratio and gravitational acceleration led to nonmonotonic behavior of the particles' velocity skewness and kurtosis. The settling velocity exhibited anomalous behavior compared to the free-fall Stokes velocity, with some cases of loitering observed. Clustering increased with increasing gravitational acceleration and decreasing fluid-to-particle mass ratio.

The Evolution of Compressible Solar Wind Turbulence in the Inner Heliosphere: PSP, THEMIS, and MAVEN Observations

N. Andres et al.

Summary: The compressible energy transfer rate from different heliocentric distances was calculated using PSP, THEMIS, and MAVEN observations, showing moderate increases with respect to the incompressible cascade rate. The impact of plasma compressibility on the total cascade rate was demonstrated, and the results were connected with local ion temperature and solar wind heating.
