Elaborating E/Z-Geometry of Alkenes via Cage-Confined Arylation Catalysis of Terminal Olefins

Yuanfan Wang et al.

Summary: A visible light photosensitizing metal-organic cage is used as an artificial supramolecular reactor to control the reaction of aryl radicals with terminal olefins, resulting in the selective transformation of geometrically defined E/Z-alkenes. The hydrophobic cage efficiently includes aromatic substrates, promoting Meerwein arylation and protecting E-isomeric products, while benzonitrile induces efficient E -> Z isomerization. In addition to pi-pi stacking, hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding interactions play a role in controlling the arylation of aliphatic terminal olefins. This switchable cage-confined arylation catalysis has been demonstrated in the syntheses of Tapinarof and a marine natural product, achieving controllable E/Z selectivity.

Effector Regulated Catalytic Cyclization of Alkynoic Acids Using Pt2L4 Cages

Eduard O. O. Bobylev et al.

Summary: Inspired by catalytic regulation in living cells, we developed a Pt2L4 cage whose activity can be controlled by binding effector molecules. The cage shows catalytic activity in the lactonization reaction, with the rate depending on the bound effector guest. Some effector guests enhance the rate by up to 19-fold, while one decreases it by 5-fold. When specific substrate mixtures are used, both starting materials and products act as guests, enhancing catalytic activity for one substrate and reducing it for the other. The addition of effector molecules enables the development of more complex, metabolic-like catalyst systems.

Spin Crossover Induced by Changing the Identity of the Secondary Metal Ion from PdII to NiII in a Face-Centered FeII8MII6 Cubic Cage

Hyunsung Min et al.

Summary: Discrete spin crossover (SCO) heteronuclear cages have potential applications in molecular transport and catalysis. Substitution of the secondary metal center in the face of the cage resulted in SCO behavior, observed through magnetic susceptibility, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Comparisons of the structural differences between the two cages shed light on the interplay of inter- and intramolecular interactions associated with SCO in the Ni-II analogue.

Constructing Ultrastable Metallo-Cages via In Situ Deprotonation/Oxidation of Dynamic Supramolecular Assemblies

Pingru Su et al.

Summary: Coordination-driven self-assembly allows for the spontaneous construction of highly precise metallo-supramolecules through dynamic and reversible metal-ligand interactions. However, the dynamic nature of coordination often leads to structural instability in many metallo-supramolecular assembly systems. In this study, an acid-/base-responsive tridentate ligand is incorporated into multitopic building blocks to achieve self-assembly reversibility and structural stability in metallo-supramolecular cages. The in situ transformation of these dynamic assemblies provides a reliable approach to manipulate the kinetic features and stability of metallo-supramolecules and enables modulation of encapsulation and release behaviors when utilizing nanoscale quantum dots (QDs) as guest molecules.

Creating Dynamic Nanospaces in Solution by Cationic Cages as Multirole Catalytic Platform for Unconventional C(sp)-H Activation Beyond Enzyme Mimics

Kang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the accomplishment of multirole and multi-way cage-confined catalysis by creating dynamic nanospaces in solution using highly charged positive coordination cage of [Pd-6(RuL3)(8)](28+). The biomimetic cage effect enables versatile functions and anomalous reactivities, and the amphoteric heterogeneity generated by partial deprotonation of imidazole-NHs on cage sphere enhances cavity-basicity against solution-acidity. The synergistic actions of cage hydrophobicity, host-guest electrostatic interactions, and imidazole-N coordination facilitate various catalytic reactions and phase transfers, providing a useful catalytic protocol that combines the merits of different types of catalysis.
