Geochemical speciation, ecological risk, and source identification of heavy metal(loid)s in sediments and waters from Musa Estuary, Persian Gulf

Reyhane Madadi et al.

Summary: Surface sediment and water samples were collected from Musa Estuary and analyzed for metals concentrations using ICP-MS. Cd had the highest contribution to ecological risk (49% based on PERI index). The Tessier procedure revealed that with increasing contamination, exchangeable and carbonate fractions of Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Cu increased. Cd and Pb were found to have a high risk of release based on the mobility factor and individual contamination factor indices. Cluster analysis showed different sources for different metals. The adsorption of Co, Ni, V, and Zn to sediments was influenced by Eh/pH, DOC/temperature, and salinity.

Pollution and ecological risk assessments for heavy metals in coastal, river, and road-deposited sediments from Apia City in Upolu Island, Samoa

Hyeryeong Jeong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution and ecological risks of heavy metals in coastal, river/stream, and road-deposited sediments from Apia in Samoa for the first time. Chromium and nickel concentrations in sediment samples were found to be higher than other metals. The study revealed that the origins of chromium and nickel were natural, while copper, zinc, cadmium, and lead originated from anthropogenic activities. The findings also showed that coastal sediments adjacent to the river were anthropogenically contaminated and presented a moderate ecological risk.

Integrating multiple indices based on heavy metals and macrobenthos to evaluate the benthic ecological quality status of Laoshan Bay, Shandong Peninsula, China

Jian-Yu Dong et al.

Summary: This study proposed and tested a framework for integrating heavy metal pollution-related indices and macrobenthos-based indices to assess the benthic ecological quality status of Laoshan Bay. The results showed that the benthic ecological quality status was acceptable across most of the bay, although there were high levels of heavy metal pollution. The agreement between different indices was low, suggesting that the composite index used in this study may be more reliable for assessing the ecological quality of benthic habitats.

Composition, distribution and enrichment of trace metals in sediments from the muddy area off the southern Shandong Peninsula in the Northwestern South Yellow Sea of China since 10,000 years

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: We analyzed the content, vertical distribution, and enrichment status of ten trace metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Hg, As, Ni, V, Co and Ni) in sediments of core WHZK01. The metals were mainly controlled by grain size, and their content reached a high level in smaller sediment particles. Oxides and hydroxides of Al, Ti, Fe, and Mn also contributed to metal enrichments through strong adsorption. The metal values showed a trend of increasing, fluctuating, decreasing, and then re-increasing over the past four stages, with Hg concentrations continuously increasing since 4.5 kyr BP due to ancient human metal mining and smelting activities.

Heavy metal concentration profiles and pollution assessment in the Jiangsu offshore area, China

Lihui Xiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration profiles of various heavy metals in a sediment core in the offshore Jiangsu area of China. The results showed similar profiles for most metals except Cd, with high average concentrations during Marine Isotope Stage 2-4. The concentrations of trace metals in the sediment were mainly influenced by grain size and sediment sources, and almost all heavy metals, except Cd, were positively correlated. Enrichment factors, geoaccumulation indices, and principal component analysis indicated no elemental enrichment or contamination. The high EF and Igeo values of As, Hg, and Li were likely related to their background values.

Evaluation of trace and heavy metals in different varieties of sauces to characterize their impact on human health

Anum Khaleeq et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to determine the levels of heavy metals and trace metals in different brands of sauces available in the market of Pakistan. The results indicated that some samples exceeded the permissible limits set by WHO/FAO for cadmium, lead, nickel, and cobalt. Notably, the carcinogenic risk value for nickel reached an alarming level.

Heavy metals in the sediments of Laoshan Bay, China: Distribution and contamination assessment

Xu Tian et al.

Summary: Analysis of sediment samples from Laoshan Bay, China, showed marine primary production as the main source of organic matter, while heavy metals originated from the terrestrial environment. Cd is mainly influenced by agricultural activities, while Pb contamination is likely due to fossil fuel combustion and difficult to trace over interannual variations.
