SIMILE AND ALLEGORY IN LUIS GOYTISOLO?S ANTAGON?A: A RELEVANCE THEORY APPROACH

Summary: This paper aims to provide new theoretical and methodological insights in the study of simile, extended simile, and allegory using Relevance theory. Lastly, the framework is applied to analyze extended simile in Luis Goytisolo's Antagonia. We argue that the prevalence of this rhetorical figure reflects the novel's key theme that writing is an unsuccessful attempt to make sense of the chaotic world.
