Essential oils from Acacia nilotica (Fabales: Fabaceae) seeds: May have insecticidal effects?

Vivekanandhan Perumal et al.

Summary: In this study, essential oils derived from Acacia nilotica seeds were tested against several insect pests and their effects on non-target species. The results showed that the essential oils had insecticidal activity against the tested pests, but had no significant effect on the non-target species. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of specific compounds that may contribute to the insecticidal activity of the oils.

Virulence of entomopathogenic fungi against Culex pipiens: Impact on biomolecules availability and life table parameters

Heba M. Hamama et al.

Summary: Culex pipiens mosquitoes, considered vectors for arboviruses such as West Nile virus and encephalitis virus, were studied for their biological and biochemical effects when exposed to entomopathogenic fungi. Results showed that Metarhizium anisopliae demonstrated the highest larval mortality and virulent effect against Cx. pipiens. Biochemical analysis revealed a quantitative decrease in total soluble proteins, lipids, and carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes in treated larvae, alongside histopathological effects on insect cuticles, muscles, and midgut.

Pomegranate Peel as a Source of Bioactive Compounds: A Mini Review on Their Physiological Functions

Yaxian Mo et al.

Summary: The production and consumption of pomegranates have been increasing due to their taste and nutrition. However, the by-products produced during fruit processing, such as peels and seeds, can lead to environmental pollution if not handled properly. This paper reviews the characterization and physiological functions of key bioactive compounds in pomegranate peel, highlighting their effects on human health. The main phenolic substances, dietary fiber, and other bioactive substances in pomegranate peel act as antioxidants, providing various benefits such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and cardiovascular protection. Understanding these compounds can lead to better utilization of waste sources for physiological applications.

Shaimaa M. Farag et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of agricultural residues, flax seed and black seed peels, as raw materials for high value-added products and botanical insecticides. The results indicate that petroleum ether extracts are the most efficient solvents with significant toxicity against Cx. pipiens larvae. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of various chemical constituents with insecticidal activity in the peels of flax and black seeds.
