Effect of drum structure on particle mixing behavior based on DEM method

Ganggang Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different drum structures and operation parameters on particle motion and mixing through simulation. The results show that the contact number between particles and wall is improved in LC and LLC compared with the cylinder drum. Higher particle velocity is observed in LC at high rotating speed, and the particle velocity in the falling region is significantly improved in LLC. The thickness of active layer is smaller in LLC, and the local particle mixing quality is the best. LLC tends to weaken the particle flow, reduce fluctuations in particle concentration, and achieve equilibrium state earlier.

Parameter calibration and mixing uniformity of irregular gravel materials in a rotating drum

Xiangwu Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, the appropriate selection of physical and contact parameters in the mixing processes of gravel materials using the discrete element method was investigated. Physical parameters of irregular gravel were obtained through experiments, and contact parameters were determined using the response surface method. The mixing processes of gravel materials in a rotating drum with different cylindrical rod structures were simulated, and the number of contacts between particles was used to characterize the mixing uniformity. The results showed that cylindrical rods significantly improved mixing uniformity, with the best effect observed when the distance between cylindrical rods was twice the maximum particle size.

Investigation of impacts of particle shape on mixing in a twin paddle blender using GPU-based DEM and experiments

Behrooz Jadidi et al.

Summary: Non-spherical particles have a lower mixing quality compared to spherical particles in a twin paddle blender. Cubical particles show the highest compactness in the solid mixture. Non-spherical particles exhibit a higher resistance to movement. The diffusion mechanism is superior in mixing, with shear and normal stresses peaking near the blade tips.

Research on the effect of the cone-in-cone insert on the discharge behaviour of conical silo

Xiangwu Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of cone-in-cone insert parameters on silo discharge behavior was investigated using DEM simulations. The simulation results showed that the insert angle beta and the height from the silo port H1 significantly affected the flow pattern. To achieve mass flow, appropriate combinations of H1, H2, and D2 should be selected when beta is greater than 135 degrees. Adding an insert with beta greater than 130 degrees resulted in evenly distributed normal pressure along the silo wall and reduced wear.

Modeling and numerical research on powder paving process of nylon powder in selective laser sintering

Xiangwu Xiao et al.

Summary: The flowability of nylon powder has a significant impact on the smoothness and density uniformity during the powder paving process in selective laser sintering. This study uses the discrete element method to simulate the powder paving processes and investigates how process parameters and particle size distribution affect the quality of powder paving. The results show that roller translational velocity, roller diameter, and vibration frequency have notable effects on the dense characteristic and density uniformity of the build zone.

The influence of cohesion on polyhedral shapes during mixing in a drum

Nicolin Govender et al.

Summary: The blending of granular materials with different morphologies in industrial processes is unpredictable. Discrete element method simulations using polyhedral particles were used to study the effect of cohesion and particle shape in a rotating drum. Results showed that symmetric polyhedral shapes had the best mixing, while irregular shapes had the worst. Mixing improved with increasing cohesive particle size. Equipment geometry and rotation speed also significantly affected mixing.

Summary: This study investigates the mixing of cohesive particles in a soil mixer using the discrete element method. The results show that the mixer is suitable for mixing cohesive particles, and a lower filling level and higher speed and size of the rotating shaft lead to better mixing efficiency.

Segregation dynamics of the binary-size granular system in a split rotary drum

Zhijian Zuo et al.

Summary: This study explores a novel split drum to drive the size-induced axial segregation of particles. DEM simulations were conducted to investigate the particle dynamic and segregation performance, and the influence of drum speed and the speed ratio between two sub-drums was analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate that particles in the split drum exhibit faster and better axial segregation, with small particles tending to concentrate near the split.

Effect of particle angularity on flow regime transitions and segregation of bidisperse blends in a rotating drum

Christine Beaulieu et al.

Summary: The study shows that segregation decreases with increasing particle shape angularity at the same rotational speed. Different-shaped particles exhibit the same sequence of segregation patterns as rotational speed increases, but the transition speed thresholds are shape-dependent.

Experimental investigation of segregation in a rotating drum with non-spherical particles

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: The current investigation focuses on studying the impact of particle shape on the segregation of a bi-disperse mixture of particles in a rotating drum. Various particle parameters such as shape, size, density, and size ratio, as well as system parameters like time and rotational speed, are examined. The results indicate that both the shape of coarse and fine particles influence the mixing process. The choice of particle shape can be used to control segregation in different industrial scenarios.

Wall to particle bed contact conduction heat transfer in a rotary drum using DEM

Manogna Adepu et al.

Summary: The study found that different heat transfer coefficients result from the variability in particle size distribution with the same mean and standard deviation. Monodispersed particle beds exhibit better heat transfer compared to polydispersed beds. Rotation speed has minimal impact on conduction heat transfer, while better heat transfer is achieved at lower values of rolling friction.

Particle shape-induced axial segregation of binary mixtures of spheres and ellipsoids in a rotating drum

S. Y. He et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in rotating drums, spheres in ellipsoid-sphere mixtures tend to segregate axially to the middle section, with lower segregation degree as the aspect ratio increases. The axial flow induced by frictional end walls and radial segregation are essential for the development of particle shape-induced axial segregation.
