Recent precipitation trends in Peninsular Spain and implications for water infrastructure design

Javier Senent-Aparicio et al.

Summary: This study updates the trends in precipitation in Peninsular Spain and finds a decreasing trend in annual precipitation, especially in March and June. The study also shows that high-intensity storm events have increased in frequency and intensity, resulting in a significant increase in design flows in some basins. It suggests the importance of considering recent rainfall data in flow calculations to avoid underestimating the risk.

Disaggregated monthly SWAT plus model versus daily SWAT plus model for estimating environmental flows in Peninsular Spain

Gerardo Castellanos-Osorio et al.

Summary: The Water Framework Directive requires EU countries to ensure the ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems. Generating daily flow data in highly water-regulated countries like Spain is challenging, but hydrological models can be used. This study evaluated different approaches for obtaining daily flows to estimate environmental flows in two river basins in Spain. The results showed that one approach outperformed the others in terms of statistical performance and accurately characterizing the natural regime and basic flow values.

Assessing the Impact of Land-Use Dynamics to Predict the Changes in Hydrological Variables Using Effective Impervious Area (EIA)

Akanksha Balha et al.

Summary: The research investigates the hydrological impacts of historical and future land use land cover (LULC) in a specific part of the Yamuna River basin. The study evaluates the effectiveness of the GIS-Curve Number (CN) approach in calculating effective impervious area (EIA) for larger ungauged basins. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is used to simulate hydrological responses in different land-use scenarios. The findings indicate a decline in groundwater resources and an increase in surface runoff due to urbanization.

Reliability-weighted approach for streamflow prediction at ungauged catchments

Bahru M. Gebeyehu et al.

Summary: Understanding hydrological processes and accurately assessing water resources in ungauged catchments is crucial. This study introduces a new approach called Reliability-weighted (RB) method, which combines the advantages of three commonly used parameter transfer methods. The proposed method outperforms other regionalization approaches and reduces uncertainty in runoff prediction at ungauged basins.

Impact of Climate Change on the Hydrology of the Forested Watershed That Drains to Lake Erken in Sweden: An Analysis Using SWAT+ and CMIP6 Scenarios

Inmaculada C. Jimenez-Navarro et al.

Summary: Climate change is expected to alter precipitation and temperature globally, leading to regional changes in the hydrological cycle. Anticipating these changes is crucial for proper water management. The study found that under different climate scenarios, temperature and precipitation in the Lake Erken basin will increase, resulting in higher water discharge and surface runoff, increased floods and torrential precipitation, and potential negative impacts on the ecosystem in the basin.

Flood Hazards in Flat Coastal Areas of the Eastern Iberian Peninsula: A Case Study in Oliva (Valencia, Spain)

Miguel angel Eguibar et al.

Summary: The Eastern Iberian Peninsula coastal areas are prone to devastating flooding events due to high intensity rainfall, particularly in autumn. Proper hydrological and hydraulic models are crucial for assessing the risks in such flat and heavy rainy areas, where factors such as flat terrain and heavy rains create potential damage and risks for urban and rural areas.

Evaluation of RFE Satellite Precipitation and its Use in Streamflow Simulation in Poorly Gauged Basins

Sylvester Darko et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of satellite Rainfall Estimates (RFE) at daily resolution compared to ground-based meteorological datasets (GBD) through statistical and hydrological modeling approaches. Results showed strong positive correlation at monthly timescale and weak positive linear relationship at daily timescale between observed rainfall data and satellite-based estimates. While the annual precipitation from both datasets showed close correspondence, ground-based data performed better in simulating streamflows compared to satellite-based simulations at daily timescale, with improved performance for both datasets at monthly timescale.
