Mifepristone as a pharmacological intervention for stress-induced alcohol craving: A human laboratory study

Carolina L. Haass-Koffler et al.

Summary: Mifepristone may be an effective treatment for AUD, as it can reduce alcohol craving under stress conditions. However, it does not appear to have an impact on alcohol consumption.

Testing pharmacotherapies for alcohol use disorder with cue exposure paradigms: A systematic review and quantitative synthesis of human laboratory trial methodology

Lindsay R. R. Meredith et al.

Summary: This article is a systematic review and quantitative synthesis of alcohol cue exposure experiments for screening pharmacotherapies for alcohol use disorder (AUD). The results showed that eight different medications demonstrated small-to-medium effects in reducing craving following cue exposure. Recommendations are provided to further promote consistency in research to maximize the utility of cue exposure paradigms in the development of effective AUD pharmacotherapies.

Alcohol use trajectories among US adults during the first 42 weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic

Adam M. Leventhal et al.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence, drinking patterns, and sociodemographic characteristics of different subpopulations of U.S. adults during the first 42 weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings identified distinct trajectories of drinking frequency and intensity, as well as the socio-demographic factors associated with these trajectories.

Hazardous drinking and alcohol use disorders

James MacKillop et al.

Summary: Alcohol is widely used as a psychoactive drug. Hazardous drinking is associated with various health issues. Alcohol use disorders are psychiatric syndromes characterized by impaired control over drinking. The causes of alcohol use disorders include genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and social factors. Effective approaches for reducing alcohol harms exist but are underused. The field should focus on translating research into clinical applications and promoting evidence-based approaches.

Do behavioral pharmacology findings predict clinical trial outcomes? A proof-of-concept in medication development for alcohol use disorder

Lara A. Ray et al.

Summary: This study utilized a meta-analytic approach to demonstrate a significant relationship between medication effects on alcohol-induced stimulation, sedation, and craving in the laboratory and drinking outcomes in randomized clinical trials for alcohol use disorder. The findings suggest that medications which reduce these alcohol-induced effects during administration show better clinical outcomes, providing valuable guidance for screening novel compounds for AUD.
