Testing pharmacotherapies for alcohol use disorder with cue exposure paradigms: A systematic review and quantitative synthesis of human laboratory trial methodology

Summary: This article is a systematic review and quantitative synthesis of alcohol cue exposure experiments for screening pharmacotherapies for alcohol use disorder (AUD). The results showed that eight different medications demonstrated small-to-medium effects in reducing craving following cue exposure. Recommendations are provided to further promote consistency in research to maximize the utility of cue exposure paradigms in the development of effective AUD pharmacotherapies.

Summary: This study utilized a meta-analytic approach to demonstrate a significant relationship between medication effects on alcohol-induced stimulation, sedation, and craving in the laboratory and drinking outcomes in randomized clinical trials for alcohol use disorder. The findings suggest that medications which reduce these alcohol-induced effects during administration show better clinical outcomes, providing valuable guidance for screening novel compounds for AUD.
