Unveiling the mysteries of operating voltages of lithium-carbon dioxide batteries

Xu Xiao et al.

Summary: Lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries have received attention as a promising electrochemical system for energy storage and CO2 utilization. However, the reported operating voltage of around 2.6 V is questioned as exceeding the capability of the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction. This study reveals the real operating voltage of a Li-CO2 battery to be around 1.1 V, with the equilibrium potential at around 2.82 V. The operating voltages are found to be influenced by the surrounding environments, and voltage regulation rules are provided for advancing next-generation Li-CO2 batteries.

Realizing Stable Carbonate Electrolytes in Li-O2/CO2 Batteries†

Kai Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a commercial carbonate electrolyte was proven to be suitable for Li-O-2/CO2 batteries. The electrolyte captured superoxide and reacted with CO2 to form less aggressive intermediates, stabilizing the carbonate electrolyte and avoiding decomposition induced by reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the carbonate electrolyte greatly improved the reversibility of Li metal plating/stripping, enabling the possibility of using ultra-thin Li anode.

Intermetallic-driven highly reversible electrocatalysis in Li-CO2 battery over nanoporous Ni3Al/Ni heterostructure

Tianzhen Jian et al.

Summary: Li-CO2 batteries offer the potential of utilizing CO2 and serve as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries, but currently suffer from limitations in reversibility, energy efficiency, and reaction kinetics. This study presents a nanoporous Ni3Al intermetallic/Ni heterojunction that addresses these issues through optimized reactant/product adsorption and unique catalytic performance. In situ Raman studies and theoretical simulations demonstrate the substantial improvement in catalytic activity and stability achieved by NP-Ni3Al/Ni.

Direct Visualization of Dynamic Mobility of Li2O2 in Li-O2 Batteries: A Differential Interference Microscopy Study

Chi Zhou et al.

Summary: The kinetics of interfacial reactions play a critical role in the reversibility and discharge/charge performance of nonaqueous lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries. This study used laser confocal microscopy combined with differential interference contrast microscopy (LCM-DIM) to monitor the Li-O-2 interfacial reaction and trace the Li2O2 migration processes. The concentration of the redox mediator was found to affect the dynamic behavior of the reaction. In low concentrations, Li2O2 particles showed high mobility at the early discharge stage, while in high concentrations, both solution and surface routes participated in Li2O2 formation.
