Tumor-to-Tumor Metastases Involving Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinomas: A Diagnostic Challenge for Pathologists Needing Clinical Correlation

Claudia Manini et al.

Summary: Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare event that requires accurate identification by pathologists. It can be straightforward to identify when the tumors have different histologies, but can be challenging when two carcinomas with similar cytoarchitecture are present, one inside the other under the microscope. In this study, we report four cases involving clear cell renal cell carcinoma and highlight the difficulties in recognizing some of them. An appropriate clinical-pathological correlation, including a review of the patient's history and radiological exams, would greatly aid in routine identification of tumor-to-tumor metastases.

Metastatic Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Involving the Thyroid Gland: A Clinicopathologic Study of 17 Patients

Jaylou M. Velez Torres et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the clinical and immunohistochemical features of metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the thyroid gland. It found that this condition is rare and usually occurs remotely after the initial diagnosis. Cytological and histological features may overlap with primary thyroid lesions, but immunohistochemistry can help distinguish them reliably.

Metastases to the Thyroid Gland: What Can We Do?

Qiushi Tang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the research status of thyroid metastatic cancer in order to improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment, as well as the prognosis of patients. Metastases to the thyroid gland are not common and the clinical manifestations are not specific. FNAB combined with IHC analysis is an accurate method for diagnosis and surgical treatment is the main approach, supplemented by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Individualized treatment plans developed by a multidisciplinary team are recommended.

Thyroid and renal cancers: A bidirectional association

Maria Irene Bellini et al.

Summary: There is a significant interrelation between the thyroid gland and the kidney parenchyma, with dysfunction of one affecting the metabolism of the other. The increase in thyroid tumors and their association with various malignancies, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer, increases the risk of kidney disease. A systematic review of 18 studies highlighted patient characteristics, treatment, and follow-up, showing a potential strong association between genetic susceptibility and secondary malignancy.

Tumor-to-Tumor Metastasis of Renal Cell Carcinoma to a Follicular Variant of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review

Fatima Badawi et al.

Summary: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common renal malignancy with the potential to metastasize to unusual sites, such as the thyroid gland. This case report highlights the rarity of tumor-to-tumor metastasis, with RCC metastasizing to a follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (FVPTC). Further studies and immunohistochemical analysis are necessary for the diagnosis of such unusual cases.

Metastasis to the thyroid gland: a single-institution 16-year experience

Charles A. Ghossein et al.

Summary: Metastasis to the thyroid gland is a rare phenomenon with an incidence of 0.36% in all thyroid malignancies, presenting as a solitary thyroid mass before the discovery of the primary tumor, posing a diagnostic challenge. Although the overall prognosis is poor, a subset of patients with oligometastasis can be managed surgically.

Summary: Thyroid metastases from RCC have a better prognosis and can occur long after nephrectomy. Thyroidectomy should be considered to prevent the development of central neck disease.
