Do holometabolous insects molt spontaneously after adulthood? An exceptional case report in fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), with discussion of its inferred endocrine regulation especially in relation to neoteny

Summary: In a firefly species in Taiwan, neotenic females were found to undergo a post-imago molt, which was different from the traditional belief that winged insects stop molting after reaching adulthood. These females did not lay eggs after the extra molt, possibly due to reproductive stress leading to endocrine disorders. It is suggested that these females may retain prothoracic glands from the larval stage, allowing them to molt as adults under certain conditions.
