Overview of the Role of Vanillin in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Neuropathophysiological Conditions

Clara Iannuzzi et al.

Summary: Nowadays, bioactive natural products are vital for drug development due to their safety and strong antioxidant power. Vanillin, a natural phenolic compound found in vanilla beans, is widely used in various industries. In addition to its industrial applications, vanillin has numerous beneficial effects on human health, such as being an antioxidant and possessing anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, anti-metastatic, and anti-depressant properties. Furthermore, vanillin exhibits neuroprotective effects on neurological disorders and neuropathophysiological conditions. This study reviews the mechanisms by which vanillin prevents neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, providing the latest insights into its beneficial properties for chronic neurodegenerative diseases.

Microsponges as Drug Delivery System: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives

Avadh Biharee et al.

Summary: Microsponges are polymeric delivery devices made of porous microspheres used for targeted drug delivery, transdermal drug delivery, anticancer drug delivery, and bone substitutes. This study analyzes the recent developments and prospects of microsponge-based drug delivery systems, including their preparation methods and therapeutic applications. Various techniques for developing microsponges, such as liquid-liquid suspension polymerization and ultrasound-assisted microsponge, are summarized. Microsponges can reduce side effects, increase drug stability, and deliver hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs to specific targets.

Development of apigenin loaded gastroretentive microsponge for the targeting of Helicobacter pylori

Mohammed Jafar et al.

Summary: The present work aims to develop a gastroretentive microsponge loaded with apigenin for targeting H. pylori. The microsponges were prepared using the quasi-emulsion technique and evaluated for various physicochemical properties, in-vivo gastric retention, and in-vitro anti-H. pylori activity. The microsponge with high product yield and entrapment efficiency, sustained gastric retention, and prolonged drug release was selected for further investigations. The developed microsponge exhibited a spherical form, porous surface, and interconnected spaces, and apigenin was dispersed within the polymeric matrix. The microsponge demonstrated enhanced antibacterial activity against H. pylori compared to pure apigenin, making it a promising alternative for targeted therapy.

Topical delivery of heparin from PLGA nanoparticles entrapped in nanofibers of sericin/gelatin scaffolds for wound healing

Duygu Deniz Akolpoglu Basaran et al.

Summary: Skin regeneration is a crucial issue in tissue engineering, and developing effective biomaterials for enhanced regeneration while meeting the healing requirements is a challenge. This study encapsulated heparin in PLGA nanoparticles and incorporated them into Ser/Gel nanofibers to create a controlled release system promoting skin tissue regeneration. Sericin addition slowed down scaffold degradation, and the scaffold with a Ser/Gel ratio of 1/2 was considered the most promising candidate due to its proper fiber morphology, high water retention, and low degradation degree.
