The Macrobiotus persimilis-polonicus complex (Eutardigrada, Macrobiotidae), another example of problematic species identification, with the description of four new species

Roberto Bertolani et al.

Summary: In the phylum Tardigrada, a comprehensive study on Macrobiotus species was conducted using integrated methods, including morphology, morphometry, and molecular biology. It was found that Macrobiotus persimilis and Macrobiotus polonicus are very similar species, and four new species were identified. Molecular data confirmed the high genetic distances of these new species in the cox1 gene. Furthermore, it was observed that multiple species can coexist in the same moss.

Expanding Acutuncus: Phylogenetics and morphological analyses reveal a considerably wider distribution for this tardigrade genus

Matteo Vecchi et al.

Summary: The Antarctic endemicity of the Acutuncus genus was refuted with the discovery of Acutuncus mariae Zawierucha, 2020 in the Svalbard archipelago. Through integrated analysis of Acutuncus populations from the UK and Italy, as well as a population of Acutuncus antarcticus near its type locality, the climatic and geographic range of the Acutuncus genus was expanded. These findings led to the re-evaluation of Acutuncus morphological diagnoses and its classification in the newly proposed monotypic family Acutuncidae fam. nov. Two new Acutuncus species were described from Europe: Acutuncus mecnuffi sp. nov. and Acutuncus giovanniniae sp. nov.

Effects of synthetic acid rain and organic and inorganic acids on survival and CaCO3 piercing stylets in tardigrades

Edoardo Massa et al.

Summary: Long-term environment acidifications due to decrease pH of the rainwaters affect both soils and water bodies, with tardigrades being the organisms most likely to be affected. This study quantifies the effects of acid rain and other tested acids on three species of tardigrades, showing that their impacts vary depending on pH, exposure time, and tardigrade species.

Effect of paracetamol on the storage cells of Hypsibius exemplaris-ultrastructural analysis

Filip Wieczorkiewicz et al.

Summary: This study reports the effects of paracetamol on tardigrade storage cells for the first time. The research found that increasing paracetamol concentration and incubation time increases the number of damaged mitochondria in storage cells, and activates and intensifies autophagy. Moreover, the relocation of some organelles and cell deformation may indicate cytoskeleton damage.

AN INTEGRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF A NEW RICHTERSIUS SPECIES FROM GREECE (TARDIGRADA: EUTARDIGRADA: RICHTERSIUSIDAE)

Justyna Pogwizd et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new tardigrade species, Richtersius tertius sp. n., from Greece, is described. The description is based on morphological, morphometric, and genetic analysis. The new species, Richtersius tertius sp. n., differs from other related species primarily in the morphology and size of cuticular pores in hatchlings, as well as some morphometric characters. This study contributes to the understanding of morphological variability and biodiversity within the genus Richtersius and officially describes the third species within the genus.

Morphology and taxonomy of the genus Ramazzottius (Eutardigrada; Ramazzottiidae) with the integrative description of Ramazzottius kretschmanni sp. nov

R. Guidetti et al.

Summary: This study described a new species of the genus Ramazzottius and compared it with other Ramazzottius species. It also provided new insights into the anatomy of these animals and their eggs, contributing to a better understanding of the diversity and evolution of the Ramazzottius genus and other eutardigrade genera.

First record of a deep-sea tardigrade from the South China Sea, Halechiniscus janus sp. nov. (Arthrotardigrada: Halechiniscidae)

Lifen Bai et al.

Summary: The knowledge of marine tardigrades in the South China Sea is very limited, with only four species recorded until now. This study describes a new species of deep-sea tardigrade, Halechiniscus janus, found in this sea. The discovery of this new species with its unique morphological traits provides new insights into the biogeography, ecology, and systematics of tardigrades.

Roberto Guidetti et al.

Summary: This study describes a new species of Crenubiotus integratively using morphological and molecular genetic markers, and confirms its phylogenetic position within the Macrobiotoidea. The family Richtersiidae is redefined as Richtersiusidae fam. nov. based on nomenclatural issues.

Edoardo Massa et al.

Summary: The study investigated the tardigrade fauna of Kristianstads Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve in Sweden, identifying 33 species including 4 new species. The results indicate a rich diversity of tardigrades in the KVBR area, contributing to the knowledge of tardigrade biodiversity in the region and Sweden as a whole.
