Can seagrass modify the effects of ocean acidification on oysters?

Natasha Garner et al.

Summary: Seagrass may not be a panacea for mitigating the negative impacts of ocean acidification on oysters, but it can benefit oyster growth.

Local Populations of Eastern Oyster from Louisiana Differ in Low-Salinity Tolerance

Lauren M. Swam et al.

Summary: This study assessed the responses of four Louisiana eastern oyster stocks to low-salinity exposure. The results showed significant differences in mortality rates between different oyster populations under low-salinity conditions, indicating that some populations are better adapted to low-salinity environments. This difference may be attributed to similarity between the site of origin and grow-out conditions, as well as greater phenotypic plasticity in certain oyster populations. The identification of oyster stocks that can survive under extreme low-salinity conditions is important for the development of salt-tolerant broodstock to support aquaculture in areas experiencing or predicted to experience low-salinity events.

Siltation negatively affects settlement and gaping behaviour in eastern oysters

Luke A. Poirier et al.

Summary: The study found that sediment negatively affected oyster spat settlement on bottom shell, with spat densities being significantly lower when sediment was present, especially on the upper side of bottom shells. The behavior of wild adult oysters was also negatively affected by acute burial, leading to eventual death. The reduction in settlement in the presence of siltation is likely due to the combined effects of suspended sediment on cue detection and bedded sediment on substrate availability, which can have cascading effects on the surrounding biological community as oysters are ecosystem engineers.

Seagrass-driven changes in carbonate chemistry enhance oyster shell growth

Aurora M. Ricart et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the ability of seagrasses to facilitate oyster calcification and shows how non-trophic metabolic interactions can modulate the effects of environmental change.
