Elevated CO2 enhanced water use efficiency of wheat to progressive drought stress but not on maize

Qingjun Cao et al.

Summary: Global rising atmospheric CO2 concentration and drought stress have profound effects on crop growth and yield. The responses of wheat and maize plants to progressive drought stress under different atmospheric CO2 concentrations were investigated in this study. Different water management strategies should be developed to optimize crop water use efficiency in the future drier and CO2-enrich environment.

Short-term elevated temperature and CO2 promote photosynthetic induction in the C3 plant Glycine max, but not in the C4 plant Amaranthus tricolor

Tianyu Zheng et al.

Summary: The continuous increase in temperature and CO2 concentration will impact global photosynthesis, especially for C-4 species. This study found that elevated temperature and/or CO2 concentration had significant effects on photosynthetic induction and carbon gain in Glycine max, but had little effect on Amaranthus tricolor.

Down-regulation of photosynthesis and its relationship with changes in leaf N allocation and N availability after long-term exposure to elevated CO2 concentration

Siyeon Byeon et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the down-regulation of photosynthesis is mainly caused by the dilution of nitrogen due to an increase in nonstructural carbohydrates, rather than progressive nitrogen limitation. Different plant species exhibit varying levels of flexibility in N allocation against changes in CO2 concentration.

Revisiting Why Plants Become N Deficient Under Elevated CO2: Importance to Meet N Demand Regardless of the Fed-Form

Maaya Igarashi et al.

Summary: The study found that the increase in plant biomass under elevated CO2 concentration is lower than expected, mainly due to induced nitrogen deficiency. While some hypotheses were not confirmed, the results showed that higher CO2 concentration significantly enhances water-use efficiency in plants, and accelerated growth rate increases the demand for nitrogen.

Yield Response of an Ensemble of Potato Crop Models to Elevated CO2 in Continental Europe

David H. Fleisher et al.

Summary: A multi-model comparison study evaluated the performance of ten potato crop models in predicting potato yield response to elevated CO2 when calibrated with ambient CO2 data. Results showed that the accuracy of predictions for elevated CO2 responses was closely related to the calibration error, suggesting the importance of calibration in model development.

Potato Response to Drought Stress Physiological and Growth Basis

Taylor Gervais et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify and characterize drought-tolerant potato genotypes and related key traits through assessing tuber yield under greenhouse conditions. It was found that tolerant potato genotypes showed a significant increase in water-use efficiency, and leaf protein content, photosynthesis rate, and transpiration rate were correlated with drought tolerance.

Combined Impact of Elevated CO2Concentration and Climatic Warming on Potato Yield and Quality in Semi-arid Regions

Yubi Yao et al.

Summary: The experiment demonstrated that both climatic warming and elevated CO(2)concentrations affected the growth of potatoes, leading to increased net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of potato leaves. This improvement contributed to enhanced dry matter accumulation and increased potato yield.

Potato Response to Drought Stress: Physiological and Growth Basis

Taylor Gervais et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study was to develop a method to identify and characterize drought-tolerant potato genotypes and the related key traits. Potato genotypes differed in their ability to tolerate drought based on their capacity to maintain percent tuber yield under drought relative to their well-watered controls. The rates of photosynthesis, instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUE), and leaf protein content can be used as the selection criteria for drought-tolerant potato genotypes.
