High-dimensional SO(4)-symmetric Rydberg manifolds for quantum simulation

Andreas Kruckenhauser et al.

Summary: In this study, a toolbox for manipulating arrays of high-dimensional hydrogen-like Rydberg atoms is developed. The researchers utilize the SO(4) symmetry to characterize the effects of various fields on the well-structured manifolds of these states. They also construct generalized large-spin Heisenberg models and demonstrate their applications in quantum simulation and quantum information processing.

Bloch oscillations of coherently driven dissipative solitons in a synthetic dimension

Nicolas Englebert et al.

Summary: Synthetic dimensions can introduce band properties without a periodic structure in real space, and a study in an optical resonator has now shown non-linear soliton states in synthetic frequency space. By coupling the discrete degrees of freedom of a physical system, synthetic dimensions can construct fictitious lattice structures, providing a way to study band properties in the absence of a real periodic lattice structure. Non-linearities and dissipation in synthetic dimensions have potential for rich physics, but have not been extensively explored.

Quantization and its breakdown in a Hubbard-Thouless pump

Anne-Sophie Walter et al.

Summary: The geometric properties of wave functions explain the presence of topological invariants in condensed-matter and quantum systems. We experimentally realize a tunable Hubbard interaction in an optical lattice and observe robust pumping, as well as an interaction-induced breakdown. Our results are important for further investigations of interacting topological matter, including edge effects and interaction-induced topological phases.

Instabilities of interacting matter waves in optical lattices with Floquet driving

Andrea Di Carli et al.

Summary: We experimentally investigate the stability of a quantum gas with repulsive interactions in an optical one-dimensional lattice subjected to periodic driving. The stability of the gas in the lowest lattice band is analyzed across different driving frequencies and strengths. We extend the analysis based on parametric instabilities to include modulational instabilities to explain the observed competition between the two types of instabilities. Our results have implications for minimizing heating in future applications of Floquet driving.

Chiral orbital order of interacting bosons without higher bands

Marco Di Liberto et al.

Summary: Ultracold atoms in higher Bloch bands can form chiral orbital order, but their short lifetime limits their applicability. We propose an alternative approach, using square plaquettes with a pi flux. This provides a practical route for the emergence of orbital order and chiral phases of matter, such as a chiral superfluid vortex lattice and a chiral Mott insulator.

Interaction Control and Bright Solitons in Coherently Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

J. Sanz et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the rapid control of interatomic interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate by coherently coupling two atomic states with opposite signs of scattering lengths. The elastic and inelastic scattering properties of the system are measured, and good agreement with a theoretical model is found. The formation of bright solitons by dressed-state atoms in the attractive regime is observed, and the response of the system to an interaction quench from repulsive to attractive values is studied, revealing the development of modulational instability into a bright soliton train.

Synthetic dimension band structures on a Si CMOS photonic platform

Armandas Balcytis et al.

Summary: Researchers have achieved the first realization of a synthetic frequency dimension on a silicon ring resonator integrated photonic device fabricated using a CMOS process. They confirmed its correspondence to a one-dimensional tight-binding model through optical frequency comb-like spectra and by measuring synthetic band structures. Furthermore, they realized two types of gauge potentials along the frequency dimension and probed their effects through associated band structures. This study represents a key step towards wider adoption of topological principles.

Realization of a Fermi-Hubbard Optical Tweezer Array

Benjamin M. Spar et al.

Summary: In this study, we use an optical tweezer array with lithium-6 atoms to create an eight-site Fermi-Hubbard chain near half filling. By combining the tweezer array with a quantum gas microscope, we are able to detect individual sites. By minimizing disorder in energy offsets, we observe Mott insulators with strong antiferromagnetic correlations and measure the spin correlations, which lead us to estimate an upper bound of entropy per atom. We also demonstrate the flexibility of the tweezer platform by initializing atoms on one tweezer and observing tunneling dynamics across the array for different geometries.

Coherently Coupled Mixtures of Ultracold Atomic Gases

Alessio Recati et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the relevant features of binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of coherent coupling at zero temperature. The nature of the quantum phases, such as paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and supersolid phases, are discussed in detail. The behavior of elementary excitations and the novel features caused by the spin-like degree of freedom are also discussed. The article further focuses on topological excitations (solitons, vortices) and superfluid properties, and highlights open questions for further theoretical and experimental investigations.

Protected generation of dissipative Kerr solitons in supermodes of coupled optical microresonators

Alexey Tikan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the generation of dissipative solitons in coupled resonators and reveals the advantages of this system over conventional single-resonator platforms. It shows that the accessibility of solitons varies for symmetric and antisymmetric supermode families. The study also finds that the coupling between transverse modes in coupled resonators can be substantially suppressed, leading to avoided mode crossings.

Multimode-polariton superradiance via Floquet engineering

Christian H. Johansen et al.

Summary: We investigated an ensemble of ultracold bosonic atoms within a near-planar cavity driven by a far detuned laser with modulated phase. Strong dispersive atom-photon coupling for multiple transverse cavity modes simultaneously was achieved. The resulting Floquet polaritons are a superposition of cavity modes and density excitation of the atomic cloud, exhibiting distinct avoided crossings due to the mutual interactions between these modes. With increasing laser drive intensity, a low-lying multimode Floquet polariton softens and eventually becomes undamped, corresponding to the transition to a superradiant, self-organized phase. The stability of the stationary state was demonstrated for a wide range of parameters.

Floquet Engineering a Bosonic Josephson Junction

Si-Cong Ji et al.

Summary: In this study, Floquet engineering of tunnel coupling between a pair of one-dimensional bosonic quasicondensates in a tilted double-well potential was investigated. By modulating the energy difference between the two wells, tunnel coupling was reestablished and its amplitude and phase were precisely controlled. This allowed for coherence between two initially uncorrelated Bose gases and preparation of different initial states in the emerging sine-Gordon Hamiltonian. The Floquet system was fully characterized and the dependence of both equilibrium properties and relaxation on the modulation was studied.

Drive-induced nonlinearities of cavity modes coupled to a transmon ancilla

Yaxing Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of off-resonant drive on the nonlinearities of cavity modes coupled to transmon ancillas. The study shows that the drive can induce multiphoton resonances among cavity and transmon excitations, leading to strong modification of cavity nonlinearities. It also demonstrates that the cavity Kerr nonlinearity relates to the third-order nonlinear susceptibility function of the driven ancilla, providing a numerically efficient way of computing the cavity Kerr. Furthermore, the paper proposes a method to dynamically correct the cavity Kerr nonlinearity using a single off-resonant transmon drive.
