Chromium toxicity, speciation, and remediation strategies in soil-plant interface: A critical review

Usman Zulfiqar et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the concern for environmental pollution caused by chromium (Cr) has increased. This review summarizes the biogeochemical processes that regulate the mobilization, accumulation, bioavailability, and toxicity of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in soils. The impacts of Cr(VI) on plant growth and development, as well as the oxidative stress it induces in plants, are highlighted. The review also discusses the mechanisms plants use to cope with Cr(VI) toxicity, such as avoiding absorption or detoxifying the compound through antioxidant production. Additionally, it explores recent advances in remediation techniques for Cr(VI)-contaminated soil and water, such as bioremediation/phytoremediation, organic amendments, and nano-remediation supplements.

Risk management for arsenic in agricultural soil-water systems: lessons learned from case studies in Europe

Kirsti Loukola-Ruskeeniemi et al.

Summary: The use of biologically synthesized adsorbents proved effective in reducing the mobility and toxicity of arsenic, while reverse osmosis membrane systems showed high removal efficiency for arsenic in surface water. Sustainability assessments indicated that adsorption and coagulation-filtration processes were suitable for treating surface waters with significant arsenic concentrations, and the risk management procedure developed in Germany is recommended for addressing arsenic in agricultural soil and water worldwide. Risk management measures have been successful in both Freiberg and Verdun.

Occurrence, contamination evaluation and health risks of trace metals within soil, sediments and tailings in southern Tunisia

F. Khelifi et al.

Summary: The study found significant impacts of mining and ore processing activities on the environment and human health in a south Mediterranean area of southern Tunisia. While the non-carcinogenic risk did not exceed established thresholds, there were cases with carcinogenic risks associated with exposure to Cr. Children in the mining area were found to be more vulnerable to metal contamination and potential health complications than adults, with females also showing higher vulnerability than males in the concerned area.

Environmental and health risk assessment of potentially toxic trace elements in soils near uranium (U) mines: A global meta-analysis

Li Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the pollution levels, distributions, ecological, and human health risks of potentially toxic trace elements (PTEs) in soils near uranium (U) mines worldwide. The results indicate that the studied soils are heavily polluted by U and Cd, with higher pollution levels observed in France, Portugal, and Bulgaria. Cd and U contribute more to the potential ecological risk, and oral ingestion is the main exposure route for soil PTEs. The hazard index (HI) values for children exceed the safe level for U and As, while Cu presents unacceptable carcinogenic risks. This study emphasizes the urgent need to address PTE pollution in U mine-associated soils on a global scale.

Probabilistic multi-pathway human health risk assessment due to heavy metal(loid)s in a traditional gold mining area in Ecuador

Samantha Jimenez-Oyola et al.

Summary: The study conducted a Bayesian probabilistic human health risk assessment related to multi-pathway exposure to heavy metal(loid)s in a gold mining area in Southern Ecuador. The results showed unacceptable risk levels for human health in both adults and children, primarily through ingestion of tap water and incidental ingestion of surface water. However, exposure to soil via accidental ingestion and dermal contact was below the safety limit, posing no risk to human health.

Quality and human health risk assessment of uranium and other heavy metals in drinking water from Kwale County, Kenya

Pamella Kageliza Kilavi et al.

Summary: The study found that drinking water near Mrima Hill and the Kwale heavy minerals sand deposit in Kwale County, Kenya is contaminated with excess levels of Cr and Cd, while Ni, Cu, As, and U levels are within acceptable limits. Both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks from exposure to these heavy metals were higher than recommended values for both adults and children in the study areas.
