The impact of COVID-19 on fertility behaviour and intentions in a middle income country

Tom Emery et al.

Summary: The COVID pandemic has had an impact on fertility intentions and behavior in the Republic of Moldova. Changes in the use of contraceptives were observed, with a decrease in the use of intrauterine devices and an increase in the use of male condoms. However, there was no overall decrease in contraceptive use. Individuals interviewed after the onset of the pandemic were less likely to be trying to conceive in the short term, but medium term fertility intentions remained unchanged.

Employment Instability and Fertility in Europe: A Meta-Analysis

Giammarco Alderotti et al.

Summary: The relationship between employment instability and fertility is a major topic in demographic research, with a negative effect of employment instability on fertility, especially stronger for men's unemployment and least likely for women with fixed-term contracts. The negative effect of employment instability on fertility has become stronger over time, and is more severe in Southern European countries, where social protection for families and the unemployed is least generous.

Carlotta Giustozzi et al.

Summary: This paper examines the interaction between unemployment experiences and political trust in the USA and 23 European countries from 2002 to 2017, revealing that personal experiences of unemployment can lower trust in democratic institutions across all countries. The research shows that the impact of unemployment on political trust varies between countries, with a paradoxical finding that the negative effect of unemployment on political trust is stronger in more generous welfare states.

A gendered lens on COVID-19 employment and social policies in Europe

Rose Cook et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 outbreak and economic crisis have prompted European governments to take extraordinary actions to support citizens, with a focus on targeted support for most affected groups like women. While there is potential for the crisis to reshape gender relations for the better, concerns exist about exacerbating existing gender inequalities. Public policy has the potential to mitigate these impacts and ensure a gender-sensitive recovery from the crisis.

COVID-19 and the gender gap in work hours

Caitlyn Collins et al.

Summary: School and day care closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have increased caregiving responsibilities for working parents, leading many to change their work hours. Mothers with young children have reduced their work hours four to five times more than fathers, resulting in a 20-50% growth in the gender gap in work hours. This highlights the challenges posed to women's work hours and employment by the COVID-19 pandemic.
