Two independent genetic markers support separation of the myxomycete Lycogala epidendrum into numerous biological species

Summary: In this study, the researchers constructed the detailed phylogenies of the genus Lycogala using DNA sequences from herbarium specimens from different continents. The results showed that L. epidendrum is a polyphyletic group and the other recognized species are scattered throughout the phylogenetic tree. Barcode analysis revealed multiple 18S rDNA phylogroups of L. epidendrum, indicating significant genetic variations within the species. Furthermore, there was no evidence of hybridization between ribosomal and mitochondrial phylogroups, suggesting reproductive isolation between the tested phylogroups.

A three-gene phylogeny supports taxonomic rearrangements in the family Didymiaceae (Myxomycetes)

Summary: In this study, the phylogeny of the family Didymiaceae was reconstructed based on three independent genetic markers: the 18S rDNA gene, the translation elongation factor 1-alpha, and the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene. The results showed that only species of the genus Diachea formed a monophyletic clade, while the other four genera were clearly para- or polyphyletic. The study also revealed the formation of a monophyletic clade between species of the genus Didymium and the only species of the genus Mucilago.

Revisiting the morphology of Lamproderma reveals incongruities among the taxonomic characteristics of higher classifications of Myxomycetes

Summary: Despite various attempts, researchers have not reached a consensus on establishing a natural system for Myxomycetes. One recent proposal suggests moving the genus Lamproderma to a different subclass. Traditional subclasses are not supported by molecular phylogenies, and different higher classifications have been suggested. However, the taxonomic characteristics used in traditional classifications have not been reexamined.

Fifteen new species from the myxomycete genus Lycogala

Summary: Based on a study of 255 collections, we have discovered 15 new species of the genus Lycogala. These new species are morphologically similar to L. epidendrum, L. exiguum, and L. confusum, but differ in peridium structure, spore mass color, and capillitium and spore ornamentation. Species delimitation is supported by molecular markers, reproductive isolation tests, and genetic distances. We propose retaining the name L. epidendrum for the most abundant species and provide a more precise description and neotypification. We consider the previously described species L. leiosporum and L. fuscoviolaceum to be dubious and do not recognize the species L. terrestre.

A new nivicolous species of Lamproderma (Myxomycetes) from lowland and mountainous regions of Europe

Summary: Based on morphological and genetic analyses, a new dark-spored myxomycete, Lamproderma zonatopulchellum, is described. This species is morphologically similar to L. zonatum but can be distinguished by its smaller sporocarps and pale capillitium, resembling L. pulchellum instead. Genetic analysis reveals a close relationship between L. zonatopulchellum and L. pulchellum, while being genetically distant from L. zonatum. The ITS region of Lamproderma, despite its high variation, retains evolutionary signal and can be used to determine evolutionary relationships.

Diversity, Distribution, Systematics and Conservation Status of Podocarpaceae

Summary: Podocarpaceae is the second largest conifer family with diverse and functional traits, dominating the Southern Hemisphere. However, comprehensive studies on its diversity, distribution, systematics, and ecophysiological aspects are lacking. This study aims to outline and evaluate the current and past diversity, distribution, systematics, ecophysiological adaptations, endemism, and conservation status of podocarps. Through analyzing data on living and extinct macrofossil taxa and combining it with genetic data, an updated phylogeny is reconstructed and historical biogeography is understood. Podocarpaceae includes 20 genera and approximately 219 taxa, distributed in three clades, and shows remarkable adaptations from leaves to seeds, dispersal methods, and plant types, as well as a complex pattern of seed and leaf functional trait evolution.

Genetic structure of the protist Physarum albescens (Amoebozoa) revealed by multiple markers and genotyping by sequencing

Summary: This study investigated the intraspecific genetic diversity and phylogeography of Physarum albescens across the entire Northern Hemisphere, revealing that the widely distributed myxomycete species actually represents a complex of at least 18 cryptic species, some of which have limited geographical distribution. The research also found that members of the same species can coexist in different regions, and the presence of clonal specimens suggests the coexistence of sexual and asexual reproduction in natural myxomycete populations.

Another species complex in myxomycetes: diversity of peridial structures in Lycogala epidendrum

Summary: Lycogala epidendrum is a widespread myxomycete that has different morphotypes and ribogroups. The peridial vesicles show various features, such as crystals and calcium deposits, which are promising diagnostic characters. The presence of calcium deposits is rare in bright-spored myxomycetes and has not been previously observed in the order Reticulariales. The ability of vesicles to fragment suggests a possible mechanism of formation.

Summary: This study inferred the phylogeny of Trichiales based on three genetic regions and studied the evolutionary history of key morphological characters. The results showed that most fruiting body traits in Trichiales do not represent exclusive synapomorphies or autapomorphies for most monophyletic groups, and the evolution of these traits exhibited complex patterns.

Importance of type specimen study for understanding genus boundaries-taxonomic clarifications in Lepidoderma based on integrative taxonomy approach leading to resurrection of the old genus Polyschismium

Summary: The type specimens of four species of Lepidoderma were studied using an integrative approach, which included traditional taxonomy methods, morphological study, micromorphological analysis, and molecular analysis. The results revealed that certain species are conspecific, while others represent separate species. The phylogeny analysis showed that Lepidoderma is polyphyletic, with the type species clustering together with Diderma. Other species of Lepidoderma form a monophyletic clade, which is proposed to belong to the resurrected and emended genus Polyschismium. Nine species of Lepidoderma are transferred to Polyschismium.
