A Meta-analysis of the Worked Examples Effect on Mathematics Performance

Christina Areizaga Barbieri et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examines the average impact of worked examples on mathematics performance across different education stages and explores the influencing factors. After exclusions, a sample of high-quality experimental and quasi-experimental studies that reported on 181 effect sizes from 55 studies was included. The findings reveal that worked examples have a medium effect (g = 0.48, p = 0.01) on mathematics performance outcomes. Factors such as example type, pairing with self-explanation prompts, and timing of administration were found to moderate the effect.

Affective-motivational effects of performance feedback in computer-based assessment: Does error message complexity matter?

Livia Kuklick et al.

Summary: This experiment investigated the impact of more elaborated error messages on students' affective-motivational response to negative feedback. The presence and complexity of corrective feedback messages were systematically varied, and effects on students' emotions, task-related perceived usefulness, and expectancy-value beliefs were analyzed. Students' task-level performance moderated the emotional impact of feedback, and error message complexity played a role in students' affective-motivational outcomes.

The effects of internal feedback and self-compassion on the perception of negative feedback and post-feedback learning behavior

Helena Laudel et al.

Summary: Negative feedback has great learning potential but can be perceived as self-threatening. Feedback theories recommend internal feedback prior to external feedback. This study examined the effects of prompting internal feedback or self-compassion, or both, on feedback perception and post-feedback learning behavior. Participants' acceptance and fairness of the feedback were higher in the internal feedback and self-compassion conditions compared to the control condition. The results emphasize the relevance of internal feedback processes for feedback perception.

Computer-based feedback matters when relevant prior knowledge is not activated

Julie F. Shirah et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of activated prior knowledge on learning from feedback. By manipulating whether relevant or irrelevant knowledge of a foundational concept was activated before solving fraction division problems, the researchers found that immediate feedback enhanced learning when irrelevant knowledge was activated, but had no impact when relevant knowledge was activated. However, on the posttest, any feedback (immediate or delayed) resulted in greater performance regardless of timing. Thus, activating prior knowledge moderates the effect of feedback on learning.

A review of feedback models and typologies: Towards an integrative model of feedback elements

Ernesto Panadero et al.

Summary: This study selected 14 important feedback models for review and proposed a new comprehensive model by classifying and integrating shared elements. The model includes an expanded typology of feedback and a classification of models into five thematic areas. Each element and their relations were described, and future directions for theory and practice were provided.

When Problem Solving Followed by Instruction Works: Evidence for Productive Failure

Tanmay Sinha et al.

Summary: The study found that problem solving followed by instruction (PS-I) led to significantly better learning outcomes, especially when implemented with fidelity to the principles of Productive Failure. Student grade level, intervention time span, and experimental nature were contributing factors to the efficacy of PS-I over instruction followed by problem solving (I-PS) designs.

When Ignoring Negative Feedback Is Functional: Presenting a Model of Motivated Feedback Disengagement

Felix Grundmann et al.

Summary: Contrary to common belief, negative feedback can sometimes hinder performance improvements. Individuals may disengage from negative feedback to pursue hedonic goals, leading to the adoption of different emotion regulation strategies in feedback processing, which in turn affect their emotions and feedback processing.
