Computational analyses of parabolic trough solar collector in the presence of helical coil-insert

O. Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to analyze the thermal performances of a parabolic trough solar collector with a helical coil-insert inside the collector tube. The study finds that increasing the number of coil turns can improve the thermal efficiency and exergy efficiency of the collector, but also increases the pump work.

Thermal performance improvement of a LS-2 parabolic trough solar collector using porous disks

Bijan Darbari et al.

Summary: This study presents a thorough numerical investigation of a LS-2 parabolic trough collector (PTC) to introduce a manufacturable structure with high performance. The effects of design shapes, diameters, spacings, and PPI of porous materials, as well as thermal and fluidic features, on the performance of PTC are studied. It is found that increasing PPI and diameter while reducing space gaps can improve the thermal efficiency of PTC. The effects of volumetric flow rate and inlet flow temperature on thermal efficiency are also analyzed.

Numerical simulation of the thermal-hydraulic performance of solar collector equipped with vector generators filled with two-phase hybrid nanofluid Cu-TiO2/H2O

Mohammadreza Niknejadi et al.

Summary: This research investigates the influence of vortex generators (VGs) with different geometric shapes and Cu-TiO2/H2O nanofluid (NF) on the thermal-hydraulic (TH) performance, energy efficiency, and exergy of a solar collector (SC). The study focuses on the turbulent flow regime (TFR) and uses the QUICK algorithm for equation discretization. Results show that convective heat transfer (CHT), average Nusselt number (Nuavg), and pressure drop (PD) all increase with the inlet velocity of Cu-TiO2/H2O NF flow. Additionally, the addition of VGs and changing their placement states improves the performance evaluation criterion (PEC) of the SC.

Thermal performance analysis in a parabolic trough solar collector with a novel design of inserted fins

Waleed Al-Aloosi et al.

Summary: This research employed numerical simulations to study the turbulent flow in a modified parabolic trough solar collector with inserted fins. The purpose of incorporating these fins was to improve heat transfer efficiency. The simulations showed that all modified models had higher thermal performance than the reference model, with the sixth model achieving a maximum thermal performance of 1.4. Additionally, different cross-sectional areas of fins, including circular, elliptical, and square, were examined, with circular fins achieving the highest thermal performance of 1.4.
