Electronic-free and low-cost wireless sensor tag for monitoring fish freshness

Sarath Gopalakrishnan et al.

Summary: Real-time monitoring of fish products throughout the supply chain is crucial for reducing food waste, but existing monitoring technologies are complex and costly. To solve this problem, we propose a wireless sensor tag that can selectively monitor hypoxanthine (HX) as a biomarker for fish spoilage. The tag uses a self-calibrating, dual-resonator configuration and a stimuli-responsive bilayer polymer structure to detect changes in HX levels. The fabrication process is scalable and cost-effective, and the tag has been validated in refrigerated conditions. This technology provides a new platform for biomarker-specific sensors in intelligent food packaging.

Flexible Hybrid Electronics via Near-Infrared Radiation-Assisted Soldering of Surface Mount Devices on Screen Printed Circuits

Venkat Kasi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of near-infrared (NIR) technology as a nondestructive photonic approach for soldering and mounting electrical components onto printed circuits, while keeping the polymer substrate at a relatively low temperature. The results show that FHEs prepared with optimized NIR processing conditions exhibit excellent mechanical stability and effective electrical connection. Furthermore, a wearable FHE device that remotely assesses wound exudate absorption in dressings and notifies caregivers of the appropriate time to change the dressing is demonstrated.

Wireless Humidity Sensor for Smart Packaging via One-step Laser-Induced Patterning and Nanoparticle Formation on Metallized Paper

Sarath Gopalakrishnan et al.

Summary: In this study, a scalable and rapid process is developed to create a low-cost humidity sensor for wireless monitoring of moisture levels in packaged goods. The sensor utilizes laser ablation to pattern a moisture-sensitive interdigitated capacitor on commercially available metallized parchment paper. This laser-induced patterning technique also creates high surface area Al2O3 nanoparticles within the sensor, resulting in a higher humidity sensitivity compared to conventional photolithography-based processes. The sensor demonstrates a linear frequency change within the range of 0-85% RH, showing good repeatability and stable performance. The use of scalable laser fabrication processes and inexpensive materials makes this technology suitable for roll-to-roll manufacturing of low-cost wireless sensors for smart packaging applications.

Ulisses Heredia-Rivera et al.

Summary: Gamma radiation is widely used for sterilization of medical devices, but it is important to accurately monitor radiation exposure without compromising product function. Researchers have developed a low-cost wireless dosimeter that can be placed in packaged medical products to monitor radiation exposure during sterilization. The sensor tag utilizes a printed sensor antenna and a reference antenna to measure the change in impedance caused by gamma radiation exposure, allowing for remote assessment of radiation exposure levels.

Environmental reliability and moisture barrier properties of silicon nitride and silicon oxide films using roll-to-roll plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition

Won Jae Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the stability and degradation mechanism of SiNx and SiOx flexible barrier films under high temperature and high humidity conditions using water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) measurements and cyclic bending tests. The SiOx film exhibited faster oxidation and more significant degradation in barrier performance compared to the SiNx film, especially under environmental conditions of 85 degrees C/85% relative humidity. The SiNx film showed stable barrier performance even after harsh environmental reliability tests, including 10,000 cycles of bending at a fixed radius of 10 mm.
