Chemical and physical effects of polyurethane-precursor-based reactive modifier on the low-temperature performance of bitumen

Tianshuai Li et al.

Summary: The use of novel polyurethane-precursor-based reactive modifier (PRM) in modifying bitumen improves its performance and protects the environment. Through physicochemical characterizations and quantum chemical calculations, the chemical reactions and low-temperature behaviors of PRM-modified bitumen were studied. The results show that PRM reacts with active sites in bitumen, forming carbamate, urea, and amide linkages, leading to crosslinking polymerization. The modification process promotes the conversion of resin to asphaltene, enhancing the natural segregation of maltene and asphaltene. The reconfiguration and crosslinking of asphaltene molecules result in improved stiffness and fracture resistance. However, an increase in PRM concentration leads to a slight increase followed by a decrease in low-temperature properties. This research provides insights into the PRM modification mechanism and offers guidance for the further application of PRM-modified bitumen.
