Exploring first-feeding diets for European eel larval culture: Insights at morphological, nutritional, and molecular levels

Summary: This study focuses on the nutritional requirements of European eel larvae during the larval first-feeding stage. Three experimental diets were tested, and diet 3 was found to be the most effective in promoting healthy development and survival of the larvae. Molecular analysis of digestion, appetite, and growth-related genes provided insights into the feeding status and growth of the larvae during the first-feeding stage.

Summary: Due to market instability and increasing demand and prices of fishmeal, the aquafeed industry is exploring alternative protein feedstuffs such as Hermetia illucens larvae meal (HIM). This study evaluated the effects of replacing fish meal with HIM on the production performance of snakehead juveniles. The results showed that HIM can replace up to 50% of fish meal without harming the production performance and health of the fish.

Summary: The potential of a novel bacterial protein meal (BM) as a replacement for fishmeal (FM) in rainbow trout diets was evaluated in terms of growth, feed utilization, digestibility, nutrient balance and histological observations. Results showed that the new BM ingredient can safely replace fishmeal in the diets of rainbow trout without detrimental effects on growth and nutrient balance.

There is a need for comprehensive research to address these issues and improve aquaculture production.

Energy metabolism and growth-related genes were transcribed and translated at hatching to support exogenous feeding onset. Ontogeny and development of the gastrointestinal system in Indian walking catfish (Clarias magur) during its early development

Summary: The study on the ontogeny of the digestive tract and accessory organs in the Indian walking catfish revealed significant developmental changes in organs such as the oral cavity, stomach, intestine, liver, and pancreas in larvae from hatching to 35 days post-hatching. The species was confirmed to be altricial with major histomorphological events occurring after the onset of feeding. Understanding the larval digestive physiology of C. magur can facilitate the design of effective larval feed for growth and survival.
