Mission-oriented policies and the Entrepreneurial State at work: An agent-based exploration

Giovanni Dosi et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of alternative innovation policies on the economy's short- and long-run performance and public finances. Simulation results indicate that active discretionary State policies produce the best outcomes, enhancing productivity, GDP growth, and private investment. Mission innovation policies can deliver significantly better aggregate performance if the government is patient enough and willing to bear the risks associated with innovative activities.

Photovoltaic windows cut energy use and CO2 emissions by 40% in highly glazed buildings

Vincent M. Wheeler et al.

Summary: Buildings account for 30% of global energy use. Despite higher energy use and carbon emissions, the architectural trend is moving towards more glass in building design. Various window technologies have emerged in the past two decades to reduce building energy, but there is limited understanding of their optimal application in different climate conditions. This study uses thousands of building-energy simulations to evaluate the energy use and carbon-emissions reduction potential of different window technologies in various climate zones. The findings show that novel window technologies, especially high thermal performance photovoltaic windows, can achieve significant energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction in all climates, leading to the possibility of highly glazed, net-zero buildings when combined with careful geometric considerations.

Public policies and the art of catching up: matching the historical evidence with a multicountry agent-based model

Giovanni Dosi et al.

Summary: Industrial policies play a crucial role in driving international convergence, while market forces alone are not sufficient for catching up. Protectionism, if used alone, may not effectively support the process of catching up and could result in countries getting stuck in a middle-income trap.
