Systemic Analysis of the Spatiotemporal Changes in Multi-Species Electroactive Biofilms to Clarify the Gradual Decline of Current Generation in Microbial Anodes

Lucila Martinez Ostormujof et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electrochemical behavior of salt marsh electroactive biofilms using microsized stainless steel electrodes. The research described four temporal stages of biocolonization and electrochemical activity, and found that the growth rate, viability, and extracellular protein matrix content influenced the electrochemical activity of the biofilm. The study also observed a shift in microbial populations from Marinobacterium spp. to Desulfuromonas spp., which correlated to the electrochemical performance of the bioanode.

Anaerobic sulphide removal by haloalkaline sulphide oxidising bacteria

Rikke Linssen et al.

Summary: Recent discoveries have demonstrated that sulphide oxidising bacteria (SOB) from modern desulphurisation plants can spatially separate sulphide removal and oxygen reduction. However, the underlying mechanisms for electron shuttling are still unknown. This study investigated the anaerobic sulphide removal process of SOB through batch experiments and mathematical models, revealing the importance of both biological activity and chemical processes in sulphide removal.

Coupling between Ion Drift and Kinetics of Electronic Current Transients in MAPbBr3 Single Crystals

Marise Garcia-Batlle et al.

Summary: The optoelectronic properties of halide perovskite materials have been widely utilized, but understanding their working mechanisms is still challenging due to their mixed ionic-electronic conductive nature. By investigating the current transients of methylammonium lead tribromide samples, it was found that ion migration plays a significant role. The ionic migration model explains the voltage-dependent behavior observed in sample biasing experiments, while the steady-state electronic currents behave nearly ohmically. The estimated ionic mobility is approximately 10(-6) cm(2) V-1 s(-1).

Opportunities for visual techniques to determine characteristics and limitations of electro-active biofilms

Joao Pereira et al.

Summary: Optimizing bio-electrochemical systems requires a better understanding of electro-active biofilms. Existing methods, though valuable, are often destructive. Non-destructive visual techniques offer opportunities to supplement the characterization of electro-active biofilms, enabling monitoring studies to complement destructive techniques.

Electron Storage in Electroactive Biofilms

A. ter Heijne et al.

Summary: Microbial electrochemical technologies show promise for sustainable applications, with electron storage in electroactive biofilms (EABs) playing a crucial role in power output and efficiency. Understanding the mechanisms of electron storage, including reduction in redox active components and polymers, is essential for improving microbial electrochemical conversions and optimizing biotechnological processes.

Cyclic Voltammetry is Invasive on Microbial Electrosynthesis

Sanne M. de Smit et al.

Summary: The study showed that cyclic voltammetry (CV) can induce changes in biocathode composition in microbial electrosynthesis systems (MES), while also complicating its use as an analysis technique. However, CV has a positive effect on reactor performance and productivity.
