Methamphetamine-associated heart failure: a systematic review of observational studies

Veena Manja et al.

Summary: This systematic review found that the prevalence of Methamphetamine-associated heart failure (MethHF) is increasing, affecting various racial/ethnic/sociodemographic groups with a male predominance. The study highlights the importance of methamphetamine abstinence, female sex, and guideline-directed heart failure therapy in improving outcomes. However, there is heterogeneity in study design, population, comparator, and outcome assessment, preventing the combination of results and resulting in low certainty in the evidence. Prospective studies are urgently needed to accurately assess the epidemiology, clinical features, disease trajectory, and outcomes of MethHF.

Resting-state network connectivity changes in drug-naive Parkinson's disease patients with probable REM sleep behavior disorder

Rosa De Micco et al.

Summary: This study used resting-state functional MRI to investigate the functional connectivity changes associated with the presence of probable REM sleep behavior disorder (pRBD) in newly diagnosed, drug-naive and cognitively unimpaired Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. The findings suggest that functional connectivity changes within the major neurocognitive networks are already present in early drug-naive PD patients, even in the absence of clinical overt cognitive impairment. These changes are more pronounced in PD patients with pRBD.

A tripartite view of the posterior cingulate cortex

Brett L. L. Foster et al.

Summary: The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is a region of the brain that is not well understood, but it plays an important role in higher cognitive functions and brain diseases. Recent research suggests that the PCC can be divided into three subregions that support the integration of executive, mnemonic, and spatial processing systems. This tripartite subregional view reconciles previous theories and provides new avenues for future research.

Association between white matter microstructure and cognitive function in patients with methamphetamine use disorder

Yanan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between cognitive performance and white matter microstructure in patients with Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). The findings revealed that MUD patients had lower cognitive scores and abnormal diffusion metrics in the left superior longitudinal fasciculus. The diffusion metrics of this fiber tract were also related to processing speed and problem-solving ability.

Impaired biological rhythm in men with methamphetamine use disorder: the relationship with sleep quality and depression

Seda Yilmaz

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the biological rhythms of individuals with methamphetamine use disorder and examine the relationship between biological rhythm, depression, and sleep quality. The findings indicated that the biological rhythm total scores of the patient group were higher than the control group. There was a positive correlation between biological rhythm total scores and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores, as well as between Pittsburgh total scores and biological rhythm total scores. The study suggests that chronotherapies may be considered in the treatment of biological rhythm disorders in patients with methamphetamine use disorder, and it is important to evaluate these patients in terms of depression and sleep quality.

Anterior dorsal attention network tau drives visual attention deficits in posterior cortical atrophy

Yuta Katsumi et al.

Summary: In this study, we found that tau pathology in posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is mainly localized in the dorsal attention network and visual network. In the dorsal attention network, increased FTP uptake, particularly in the anterior nodes, is associated with poorer visuospatial attention. We also found that a higher anterior-to-posterior FTP ratio is related to stronger intrinsic functional connectivity within the dorsal attention network. These findings provide insights into the spatiotemporal pattern of tau propagation and the role of the dorsal attention network in PCA disease progression.

Altered functional connectivity of the default mode and frontal control networks in patients with insomnia

Hui Zheng et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the association between spontaneous regional activity and brain functional connectivity, which may differentiate insomniacs and assess the effects of rTMS treatment. By comparing the ALFF between chronic insomnia patients and healthy volunteers using resting-state functional MRI data, it was found that insomnia patients had higher ALFF in the PCC and lower ALFF in the SPL. Additionally, disrupted connectivity between the PCC and prefrontal cortex, as well as between the left SPL and frontal pole, was observed. These findings suggest that disrupted frontoparietal network connectivity could serve as a biomarker for insomnia, and monitoring pretreatment RSFC could provide insights into treatment response.

Summary: This study investigated the serum level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cognitive functions in chronic methamphetamine (METH) users. The results showed impaired executive function and working memory in METH users, as well as significantly higher serum BDNF concentrations. However, the increased BDNF level was not associated with cognitive impairments.

Short- and Long-Range Connections Differentially Modulate the Dynamics and State of Small-World Networks

Simon Arvin et al.

Summary: This article discusses the relationship between connections between neurons in the human brain and the state of the brain, as well as the role of criticality and small-world topology in neural computation. The study found that operating near criticality is beneficial for brain function, but deviations from the critical state can lead to various diseases. Modulating brain activity can be used as a treatment for neurological disorders, but further research and development of a feasible neural framework are needed.

Difference in topological organization of white matter structural connectome between methamphetamine and heroin use disorder

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the differences in psychological symptoms and brain structural connections between individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD) and heroin use disorder (HUD). By using diffusion tensor imaging and probabilistic tractography, the researchers found that individuals in the MAUD group exhibited higher scores in anxiety, hostility, and symptoms of schizophrenia. The HUD group showed higher global efficiency and network strength compared to the MAUD and healthy control groups. The findings suggest that the topological structural connections differ between HUD and MAUD, providing insights into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the psychological differences between these two substance use disorders.
