Baby-friendly hospitals in Turkey: evaluation of adherence to the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding

Summary: This study analyzed the external reassessment results of BFHs in Turkey in 2018-2019. The results showed that 60.1% of the hospitals had fulfilled all ten steps, and the western region had higher compliance rates for clinical practices than other regions. Furthermore, the reassessment and full implementation of management procedures were associated with higher compliance rates. The study suggests that regional variations should be considered in the implementation of the BFHI program.

Factors influencing exclusive breastfeeding rates until 6 months postpartum: the Japan Environment and Children's Study

Summary: This research found that early initiation of breastfeeding, early skin-to-skin contact, and rooming-in have a positive impact on the continuation of exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months postpartum, while regional social capital also supports the continuation of breastfeeding. In contrast, starting childcare, smoking during pregnancy, and an obese body type during early pregnancy are inhibiting factors for breastfeeding.

Summary: Breastfeeding practices in LMICs have been improving globally over the past decade, although they still fall short of WHO recommendations. There are significant variations in breastfeeding practices across WHO regions, with the Eastern Mediterranean and European regions, as well as upper middle-income countries, facing challenges in meeting targets. Continued efforts are needed to reach the 2025 global breastfeeding target.
