The Nature, Patterns and Consequences of Technology-Facilitated Domestic Abuse: A Scoping Review

Rojan Afrouz

Summary: Women are increasingly targeted for gender-based violence through technology and digital tools. These tools, such as GPS tracking, spyware, mobile phones, and social media platforms, have become new means for perpetrators to monitor, harass, and abuse victims. However, the understanding of the nature and impacts of technology-facilitated domestic abuse (TFDA) remains unclear. Further research and strategies are needed to address this form of abuse.

Future directions for reproductive coercion and abuse research

Karen Trister Grace et al.

Summary: Reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) is a form of intimate partner violence where individuals capable of pregnancy experience coercive behaviors threatening their reproductive autonomy. Research focuses on the association with IPV, health outcomes, demographics, and contextual factors. Future exploration should consider evolving interpretations of pregnancy intention, RCA in marginalized groups, intersections with economic abuse, and community-centered approaches to intervention and prevention.

Improving Quality of Life Among Latina Intimate Partner Violence Survivors Through Economic Empowerment

Iris Cardenas et al.

Summary: This study found that psychological abuse and economic control have negative impacts on the quality of life of Latina women, while economic empowerment can improve their quality of life, and financial strain is inversely related to quality of life. Therefore, economic empowerment should be included as part of the services offered by domestic violence organizations to survivors.

Reproductive Coercion, Intimate Partner Violence, and Unintended Pregnancy Among Latina Women

Karen Trister Grace et al.

Summary: The study highlights the risks of reproductive coercion (RC) and its association with unintended pregnancy and intimate partner violence (IPV) among Latina women. Factors such as younger age and concurrent IPV increase the risk for RC, while experiencing RC is linked to lower pregnancy planning scores. The combination of RC and IPV significantly impacts pregnancy planning scores, emphasizing the need for safety and harm reduction strategies for this population.

Latina and Caribbean Immigrant Women's Experiences With Intimate Partner Violence: A Story of Ambivalent Sexism

Carmen Alvarez et al.

Summary: Despite extensive research on intimate partner violence among Latina and Caribbean immigrant women, culturally appropriate interventions for prevention of IPV remain lacking. This study examined LCIW's experiences of domestic violence through a gender stereotype framework, finding that ascribing to gender stereotypes perpetuates and normalizes abuse. Women described themselves as communal, submissive, and dependent on men, while their male abusers were seen as controlling, angry, and violent. Defying traditional gender roles by seeking employment and establishing social networks increased the risk of violence. Migration to the United States exposed some women to opportunities and helped them to recognize their abuse, leading to seeking help and ending the abuse.

Examining the Relationship Between Economic Abuse and Mental Health Among Latina Intimate Partner Violence Survivors in the United States

America L. Davila et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between economic abuse and mental health symptoms among Latina IPV survivors in the United States, finding that economic control was the most commonly reported form of economic abuse. The results showed that economic abuse did not uniquely predict mental health after accounting for other forms of IPV victimization and sociodemographic characteristics.

Future Directions in Intimate Partner Violence Research: An Intersectionality Framework for Analyzing Women's Processes of Leaving Abusive Relationships

Veronica R. Barrios et al.

Summary: Research on intimate partner violence is increasingly focusing on women's processes of leaving abusive partners. This study uses an intersectionality framework to analyze the complex decision-making involved in leaving an abusive partner. Recommendations are made for future research to further incorporate intersectionality into IPV research and account for diversity across individuals and their environments.
