Nanostructured TiO2 as anode material for magnesium-ion batteries

Raigul Jumanova et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of nanotubes from titanium dioxide using electrochemical anodization. The nanotubes exhibited anatase phase with an inner diameter of 96-150 nm and a length of 0.6 +/- 0.1 μm. The resulting electrode showed good electrochemical performance in ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate solution.

Electrochemical Mg2+ Displacement Driven Reversible Copper Extrusion/Intrusion Reactions for High-Rate Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries

Xiaolan Xue et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using copper selenide as a durable cathode material for rechargeable magnesium batteries, improving the rate performance, structural stability, and cycle life through an ionic displacement mechanism. The reversible exchange of copper ions by magnesium ions and the in situ generation of metal copper during discharging greatly facilitate electron transport and contribute to the overall enhanced battery performance. Comprehensive characterizations confirm the reversible copper ion extrusion/reinjection processes, suggesting promising electrode materials for advanced multivalent-ion secondary batteries.

Summary: Rechargeable magnesium batteries can potentially overcome safety, cost, and energy density limitations of lithium-ion technology. A proton-assisted method enables Mg2* intercalation into oxide host lattice while anisotropic Smoluchowski effect in titanium oxide lattices results in fast Mg2* diffusion kinetics with high ion conductivity, enabling high-power Mg-intercalation batteries with inorganic oxides.
