Detection of circulating tumour cells enables early recurrence prediction in hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing liver transplantation

Peng-Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the value of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) as predictors of tumor recurrence following liver transplantation (LTx) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Results showed that post-operative CTC count >= 1 per 5 mL blood could be a potential biomarker for predicting tumor recurrence, especially in patients with no detectable CTCs before LTx and negative tumor serological markers. Moreover, post-operative serial CTC detection may be useful in post-surgical surveillance for HCC recurrence.

Surgical Treatment of Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma: Current and Emerging Principles

Eliza W. Beal et al.

Summary: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive cancer of the biliary tract, with current treatment strategies focusing on surgical resection and emerging adjunctive therapies. Despite advancements in surgical techniques and preoperative evaluation, more effective systemic therapies are still needed to reduce recurrence rates and improve survival outcomes.

Measurement of Circulating Tumor Cells to Track Hepatocellular Carcinoma Progression After Liver Transplantation-Case Report

Yuan Deng et al.

Summary: This study reported a case where circulating tumor cell (CTC) counts successfully predicted the progression of metastatic colon polyps after interventional therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), suggesting that CTC counts can be used to monitor disease progression during HCC metastasis.

Liquid biopsy to identify biomarkers for immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma

Huang Ao et al.

Summary: Immunotherapy, particularly immune checkpoint inhibitors, has made significant progress in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the challenge of identifying the optimal responders to ICIs treatment and monitoring treatment effects in a timely manner remains. Liquid biopsy may offer a promising approach to address tumor heterogeneity, identify patients who respond to immunotherapy, monitor treatment effects, and uncover resistance mechanisms.

Clearance of Circulating Tumor Cells in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Undergoing Surgical Resection or Liver Transplantation

Victor Amado et al.

Summary: Liver transplantation and surgical resection are potential curative options for patients with liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, but tumor recurrence remains a frequent issue. This study aimed to assess the role of circulating tumor cells in HCC patients undergoing surgery and their association with other markers of poor prognosis. Results suggest that incomplete clearance of circulating tumor cells post-surgery may serve as a surrogate marker of HCC aggressiveness.

Plasma MicroRNA Panel Predicts Early Tumor Recurrence in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Liver Transplantation

Ao Huang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the significance of plasma microRNA panel for predicting and monitoring early tumor recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma patients following liver transplantation. The positive status of microRNA panel was associated with a higher recurrence rate, and it changed from negative to positive earlier than AFP and DCP upon recurrence.
