Cavitation inception and evolution in cavitation on a chip devices at low upstream pressures

Farzad Rokhsar Talabazar et al.

Summary: The concept of hydrodynamic cavitation on a chip allows for easy generation of cavitating flows in microdomains and can be scaled up by arranging short microchannels in cascade formations. A new experimental test rig was constructed to generate microscale hydrodynamic cavitation, enabling cavitation bubble generation at low upstream pressures through control of downstream pressure. The study focused on flow pattern classification, scale effects, and cavitating flow evolutions, with attention to underlying mechanisms such as Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The outcome of this study makes hydrodynamic cavitation on a chip attractive for applications involving multiphase fluid flows where cavitation effects are desired.

Summary: Thanks to the development of microfluidics, researchers are able to control and monitor the cavitation phenomenon in micro-scale, providing suitable platforms for energy utilization in bio-related and industrial applications. However, the behavior of cavitation bubbles in micro-scale differs from macro-scale, necessitating in-depth investigations and application of micro-scale cavitation.

Effect of aspect ratio on flow boiling characteristics in microchannels

Ali H. Al-Zaidi et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the influence of channel aspect ratio on flow boiling characteristics of HFE-7100 in copper multi-microchannel heat sinks. It found that increasing channel aspect ratio led to higher heat transfer coefficient and lower flow boiling pressure drop, but the heat transfer rate was higher in the heat sink with the smallest aspect ratio due to its larger surface area.

Kelvin-Helmholtz instability governs the cavitation cloud shedding in Venturi microchannel

Darjan Podbevsek et al.

Summary: The paper explores the visualization of cavitation in micro-Venturi channels and identifies Kelvin-Helmholtz instability as a dominant mechanism for cavitation cloud shedding. The study also proposes a simple model to explain this phenomenon and sheds light on the suppression of supercavitating conditions in the micro-Venturi due to the instability.

Design and fabrication of a vigorous cavitation-on-a-chip device with a multiple microchannel configuration

Farzad Rokhsar Talabazar et al.

Summary: A new 'cavitation-on-a-chip' device is proposed in this study to reduce the upstream pressure required for hydrodynamic cavitation, with further pressure reduction achieved by using poly(vinyl alcohol) microbubble suspension. Different cavitating flow patterns with various intensities can be observed within the same device, and cavitating flows intensify faster in the proposed device compared to previous studies. This next-generation device has high potential for applications in microfluidic/organ-on-a-chip devices, such as integrated drug release and tissue engineering.

The Hydrodynamic Cavitation Manifestation in Small Chips

Morteza Ghorbani

Summary: Cavitation is a phase change phenomenon caused by the reduction of static pressure in a liquid medium at a constant temperature. Recent research has focused on its potential for energy release and applications in microscale. In this study, microfluidic devices were used to study the generation of cavitation bubbles, with an emphasis on surface and side wall roughness as well as size reduction effects.
