Natural radionuclides as tracers of coastal sediment dynamics in El Confital Bay (Spain): Spatial distribution and relationships with sediment characteristics

In Situ Radioactivity Maps and Trace Metal Concentrations in Beach Sands of a Mining Coastal Area at North Aegean, Greece

Summary: This study measured radionuclide concentrations at two coastline locations in the Northern Aegean Sea. The results showed variations in U-238 progenies, Th-232 progenies, K-40, and Cs-137 concentrations in beach sands. Lab-based measurements were also collected for the determination of metal concentrations. Radiological maps were produced using statistical computing, and assessment indices were compared to recommended values. The temporal aspect of this dataset can serve as a reference for future comparative studies.

Spatial autocorrelation and hotspot analysis of natural radionuclides to study sediment transport

Summary: This study deployed a mobile Delta Underwater Gamma System (DUGS) to measure low levels of natural radionuclides in sediment in an estuary, and constructed a radiometric map of the sediment. Spatial autocorrelation using Moran's I statistic showed positive clustering patterns for 40K, indicating significant spatial autocorrelation. 238U and 232Th displayed low Moran's I values but strong positive correlation, indicating some spots of clustering in the river channel. Hotspot analysis confirmed that the identified clusters had relatively high radionuclide concentrations, proving the high deposition of sediment in these areas.
