Exogenous Hemin alleviates NaCl stress by promoting photosynthesis and carbon metabolism in rice seedlings

Fengyan Meng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of salt stress on two rice varieties and the effect of Hemin in promoting photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and key enzymes under salt-stress conditions. The results showed that salt stress decreased chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, as well as net photosynthetic rate and starch content. However, the application of exogenous Hemin increased fructose and starch content, along with the activities of key enzymes related to carbohydrate metabolism. This study suggests that Hemin could alleviate the damage caused by salt stress to rice leaves.

Impacts of water deficit and post-drought irrigation on transpiration rate, root activity, and biomass yield of Festuca arundinacea during phytoextraction

Xiaobo Peng et al.

Summary: Water deficit poses a hazardous threat to phytoremediation. However, the photosynthetic efficiency of plant leaves can recover rapidly after post-drought irrigation, which enhances root activity, transpiration rate, and metal accumulation capacity. This study shows that the phytoextraction effect of drought-stressed Festuca arundinacea can recover to normal levels after post-drought irrigation. Suitable irrigation strategies can improve the phytoextraction effect of F. arundinacea and conserve water resources.

Exogenous silicon alleviates drought stress in maize by improving growth, photosynthetic and antioxidant metabolism

Jiaqi Xu et al.

Summary: Extreme dry weather caused by global climate change will reduce the growth and yield of plant crops. Silicon (Si) can improve plant growth and the resistance to various stresses. This study investigated the effects of moderate and severe drought stress on the growth, photosynthetic and antioxidant metabolism of maize, and explored the role of Si application in mitigating the damages caused by drought stress. The results showed that drought stress significantly reduced plant height, shoot and root dry weight, and yield of maize. It also affected the efficiency of photosynthetic processes and led to the production of harmful free radicals. However, the application of Si alleviated the negative effects of drought stress by enhancing plant growth, photosynthetic efficiency, antioxidant defense system, and osmotic regulation. These findings suggest that Si can play a vital role in improving the drought resistance of maize.

Mitigation of the salinity stress in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) productivity by exogenous applications of bio-selenium nanoparticles during the early seedling stage

Ali Mahmoud El-Badri et al.

Summary: In recent years, nanoparticles have gained attention as an effective strategy to improve plant growth under salt stress conditions. In this study, bio-SeNPs were used to prime rapeseed seeds, leading to improved expression of aquaporin genes, seed microstructure, germination, growth traits, physiochemical attributes, and mineral uptake under salinity stress. The bio-SeNPs enhanced water uptake during seed imbibition, increased seedlings biomass, promoted rapid seed germination, and improved the efficiency of the plants' defense system. Additionally, the bio-SeNPs modulated the uptake of Na+ and K+, which improved rapeseed growth and prevented oxidative damage due to salt stress.

Salt and osmotic stress-induced changes in physio-chemical responses, PSII photochemistry and chlorophyll a fluorescence in peanut

Kusum Khatri et al.

Summary: The study reports the effects of salt and osmotic stress on peanut growth, photosynthesis, and physiological biochemical responses. Stress caused accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), destruction of cellular processes, and ultimately reduced photosynthesis in peanut. The study also found that salt and osmotic stress reduced the size of PSII light-harvesting antenna, decreased efficiency of PSI acceptor side, damaged electron transport chain, and resulted in lower electron transport and higher ROS generation in peanut. Additionally, salt and osmotic stress induced photo-inhibition, leading to lower PSII photosynthetic yield and capturing efficiency of excitation energy by open PSII reaction centers in peanut.
