Modelling and simulation of flux prediction and salinity variation in direct contact membrane distillation for seawater desalination and brine treatment

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: Membrane distillation (MD) is an advanced desalination technology that has been widely studied. In this study, a new model was proposed to predict the membrane surface temperatures, permeate flux, and salinity variation with the operating time. The simulations showed that the feed temperature, feed flow rate, and membrane pore size had the most significant influence on the permeate flux. The feed and permeate flow rates had the highest impacts on the temperature polarization coefficient (TPC). The simulations also predicted water recovery rates of 86.8% and 72.1% for seawater and desalination brine, respectively.

Unraveling the role of feed temperature and cross-flow velocity on organic fouling in membrane distillation using response surface methodology

Francesco Ricceri et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of operating conditions on fouling development in membrane distillation is crucial for optimizing the technology. This study investigated the organic fouling development in MD by varying the feed inlet temperature and cross-flow velocity. The results showed that increasing the feed temperature led to thicker fouling layers, while higher cross-flow velocities improved the initial flux but also increased the decline rate. Higher shear stress contributed to a decrease in the final fouling layer thickness. The proposed approach proved to be a valuable tool for assessing the role of operating conditions on fouling and process performance in MD.

Coupling of forward osmosis with desalination technologies: System-scale analysis at the water-energy nexus

Mattia Giagnorio et al.

Summary: The coupling of forward osmosis (FO) with reverse osmosis (RO) or membrane distillation (MD) was investigated in the water-energy nexus, evaluating and discussing the most effective hybrid schemes for different conditions. FO-MD is more competitive for handling hypersaline solutions, while FO-RO is more effective for treating low saline wastewater.
