Reliability of hospital-level mortality in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair

Craig S. Brown et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between surgical volume and mortality rates in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair using reliability adjustment and statistical methods. The findings suggest that most hospitals do not perform enough cases to generate reliable center-specific mortality rates for open aneurysm repair. The variability in mortality rates for low-volume centers is likely to be statistical noise rather than true differences in quality of care.

One-year patient survival correlates with surgeon volume after elective open abdominal aortic surgery

Joshua T. Geiger et al.

Summary: High-volume surgeons performing elective open aortic operations provide reduced complications and improved short-term and midterm survival compared with low-volume surgeons. The study also identified clinical and postoperative variables associated with increased cardiovascular cause-specific mortality.

Declining institutional memory of open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair

Anna Kinio et al.

Summary: This study found a decrease in open aneurysm repair rates and an increase in EVAR rates at The Ottawa Hospital. Between 2014 and 2017, operating room time and anesthesia time increased, and postoperative complications also saw an increase.

Association between surgeon case volume and years of practice experience with open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair outcomes

Salvatore T. Scali et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the annual case volume of surgeons is more significantly associated with the outcomes of OAR compared to years of practice experience. Experienced surgeons have fewer complications after elective OAR, but practice experience is not associated with mortality rates. Early career surgeons perform more elective surgeries, but have longer procedure times and higher risks of complications.

Open versus Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair in the Australian Private Sector Over Twenty Years

Kirby R. Qin et al.

Summary: The landscape of AAA repair in the Australian private sector has drastically changed over the past two decades, with a clear preference towards endovascular AAA repair (EVAR). Despite stable rates of AAA surgery, EVAR saw increased use across all genders, age groups, and states.
