Implementing conjunctive management of water resources for irrigation development: A framework applied to the Southern Plain of Western Nepal

Vishnu Prasad Pandey et al.

Summary: Climate variability and insufficient irrigation pose significant challenges to agricultural productivity and food security in Nepal. Although integrating surface and groundwater use has been proposed as a strategy for enhancing efficiency and adapting to climate change, there is a lack of technical expertise in conjunctive management. This article presents a comprehensive framework for assessing conjunctive management from a systems-level perspective and suggests strategies for its implementation in Nepal, using a case study in Western Nepal as an example.

Genotype x environment x agronomic management interaction to enhance wheat yield in the Mediterranean rainfed environments of Morocco: II. Process based modeling

Krishna Prasad Devkota et al.

Summary: Durum wheat is the oldest and most cultivated cereal crop in the Middle East and North Africa region, with Morocco being a major producer. The study highlighted the importance of factors such as rainfall or irrigation, nitrogen fertilizer, cultivar, and seeding date in influencing durum wheat yield in Morocco. Context-specific management advisory is crucial for enhancing productivity and resilience in rainfed production environments.

How we used APSIM to simulate conservation agriculture practices in the rice-wheat system of the Eastern Gangetic Plains

Apurbo K. Chaki et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the capacity of APSIM to simulate the performance of conservation agriculture (CA) and conventional tillage (CT) cropping practices in diverse conditions in the Eastern Gangetic Plains. The model performed well in simulating different conditions and showed better performance in full-N compared to zero-N, capturing crop response accurately under a wide range of water stress environments.

Assessment of nutrient management in major cereals: Yield prediction, energy-use efficiency and greenhouse gas emission

Jagadish Timsina et al.

Summary: Improved nutrient management can lead to increased crop yield and economic indicators, while reducing environmental footprints and energy use. A study in Nepal compared three nutrient management practices and found that the Nutrient Expert (NE) based recommendation had the highest grain yield and gross return, while farmers' practice had the lowest. Farmers' practice also had the highest probability of increasing energy-use efficiency (EUE), followed by NE. NE had the lowest greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI) in rice and intermediate levels in maize and wheat. Specific energy (SE) and EUE were the major predictors of grain yield in all nutrient management practices. These findings highlight the potential for scaling up NE-based fertilizer recommendation in Nepal and South Asia.

Time management governs climate resilience and productivity in the coupled rice-wheat cropping systems of eastern India

Andrew J. McDonald et al.

Summary: This study shows that adjusting the planting dates of wheat can significantly increase yields in eastern India, but this requires managing rice and wheat as a coupled system. The study also reveals that current cropping calendar management reduces the wheat yield potential in the rice-wheat cropping system of eastern India.

Response and resilience of Asian agrifood systems to COVID-19: An assessment across twenty-five countries and four regional farming and food systems

John M. Dixon et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of COVID-19 on Asian agriculture and food systems and found that the resilience of farming and food systems was strengthened by inherent system characteristics and government policies prioritizing staple food production and distribution. Efforts to improve resilience should be central to recovery programmes in order to mitigate risks from future zoonoses and institutional vulnerabilities revealed by the pandemic.

Coupling landscape-scale diagnostics surveys, on-farm experiments, and simulation to identify entry points for sustainably closing rice yield gaps in Nepal

Krishna Prasad Devkota et al.

Summary: The study found that there is significant potential to increase rice yields in Nepal by improving factors such as irrigation frequency, rainfall, soil type, soil pH, and fertilizer application rates. Adoption of good agronomic practices can lead to higher productivity and profitability for rice farmers, without compromising environmental performance indicators.
