A systematic review of longitudinal risk factors for loneliness in older adults

Lena Dahlberg et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify longitudinal studies of risk factors for loneliness in older adults. The study found strong evidence for relatively few risk factors, such as not being married/partnered, limited social network, low social activity, poor self-perceived health, and depression. Future research should explore longitudinal risk factors for emotional and social loneliness.

The prevalence of loneliness across 113 countries: systematic review and meta-analysis

Daniel L. Surkalim et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the prevalence of loneliness globally. It found that problematic levels of loneliness are experienced by a substantial proportion of the population in many countries. There is a significant difference in data availability between high income countries (particularly Europe) and low and middle income countries, highlighting an important equity issue. More research is needed on the temporal trends of loneliness.

Community-based responses to loneliness in older people: A systematic review of qualitative studies

Catrin Noone et al.

Summary: Community-based responses to loneliness among older people play a crucial role in providing support and enhancing existing coping strategies. This systematic review identified three key themes for addressing loneliness in a specific community: autonomy, new social connections, and belonging. Future interventions should take a more contextual approach that considers community-level factors before establishing user-led and tailored settings to facilitate social engagement.

Exploring the nature and variation of the stigma associated with loneliness

Manuela Barreto et al.

Summary: This study investigates the social stigma of loneliness using data from The British Broadcasting Corporation Loneliness Experiment, focusing on gender, age, and cultural individualism. The findings show that men tend to have more stigmatizing perceptions and perceive more community stigma, but have less self-stigma compared to women. Younger people have higher scores on most indicators except for internal versus external attributions. People living in collectivist countries perceive loneliness as more controllable and perceive more stigma in the community than those living in individualistic countries.

A social exclusion perspective on loneliness in older adults in the Nordic countries

Lena Dahlberg et al.

Summary: This study examines the associations between social exclusion indicators and loneliness in older adults in four Nordic countries. The results show that lower frequency of social contacts and living alone are consistently associated with higher levels of loneliness in all countries, while other indicators such as lower neighbourhood safety, income concern, and no emotional support are associated with loneliness in specific countries. The findings suggest that social exclusion is an important factor in understanding and addressing loneliness.

Summary: The study shows that the increasing neighborhood-level concentrated disadvantage during the Great Recession of 2007-2009 was associated with smaller close networks among older Americans, largely due to fewer opportunities to gain new close ties.
